Face Muscles
Masseter
Origin: Zygomatic arch
Insertion: Ramus of mandible
Functions:
• Elevates and protracts mandible
• Prime mover for chewing (mastication)
Frontalis
Origin: Galea aponeurosis
Insertion: skin of eyebrows
Functions:
• Raises eyebrows
• Wrinkles forehead
Procerus
Origin: lower nasal bone
Insertion: skin at top of nose between eyebrows
Functions:
• Draws skin between eyebrows
• Helps flare nostrils
• Expression of frowning/ anger/perplexed
Corrugator Supercilii
Origin- arch of frontal bone; above nasal cavity
Insertion- skin of eyebrow
Functions:
• Draws eyebrows together and downward
• Wrinkles skin of forehead vertically
(as in frowning)
Nasalis
Origin: maxillary and cartilage of nose
Insertion: cartilage on bridge of nose
Functions:
• Flares nostrils
Risorius
Origin: Fascia of masseter muscle
Insertion: corner of mouth
Functions:
• Draws angle of mouth out laterally
• As in smiling widely or grinning
Buccinator
Origin: maxilla and mandible
near molars
Insertion: Orbicularis oris
Functions:
• Compresses cheeks
• As in whistling and sucking
• Pushes food back to teeth
when chewing
Sternocleidomastoid
Origin= manubrium and clavicle
Insertion= mastoid process
Functions:
1. Rotates head to opposite side
2. Flexes neck- “prayer muscle”
3. Laterally flexes neck to same side
Platysma
Origin= fascia in upper chest
Insertion= mandible, skin and muscle at corner of
mouth
Functions:
1. Tenses skin of neck (like in shaving)
2. Depresses mandible (synergist)
3. Pulls
Auricular Muscles
3 muscles above, in front and behind ear
Origin: temporal bone
Insertion: ear
Functions:
1. Moves ears
Levator labii superioris
Origin= zygomatic bone, orbit
Insertion= skin and muscle of upper lip
Functions:
1. Opens lips
2. Raises and furrows upper lip
Levator anguli oris
Origin= maxilla (above canine teeth)
Insertion= muscles around mouth
Functions:
1. Raises corners of mouth upwards= smile
Depressor labii inferioris
Origin= mandible
Insertion= skin and muscle of lower lip
Functions:
1. Draws lip downward- “pouting muscle”
Depressor anguli oris
Origin= mandible
Insertion= skin and muscle at corners of mouth
Functions:
1. Draws corners of mouth downward
(“tragedy mask”)
Mentalis
Origin= mandible
Insertion= skin of chin
Functions:
1. Wrinkles chin
2. Protudes lower lip
Lateral Pterygoid
Origin= sphenoid
Insertion= condyle of mandible (TMJ)
Functions:
1. Depresses and protracts mandible
2. Moves mandible side to side
Medial Pterygoid
Origin= sphenoid, maxilla, palatine
Insertion= mandibular ramus
Functions:
1. Elevates mandible,
2. moves it side to side
Suprahyoid
4 muscles above hyoid
Origin: mandible, mastoid and styloid process
Insertion; hyoid
Functions:
1. Pull hyoid and
= widens pharynx to receive food
(allows tongue to force food down the back of throat)
2. Larynx is pulled and
= closes off trachea so food
doesn’t get in lungs
Infrahyoid
4 Muscles below the hyoid
Origin=manubrium, scapula, clavicle, thyroid cartilage
Insertion= hyoid
Functions:
1. Pull hyoid and larynx back to normal position
after swallowing
