Refer to the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals 8th Edition 2011 (the Guide).
‘Applicants’ are Staff or Students of the Faculty of Science, Cairo University. Effective alternatives to
using live animals must be considered. All use of animals for any purpose must be justified.
Investigators have personal responsibility for all matters related to the welfare of the animals they use
and must act in accordance with all requirements of the Guide. This responsibility begins when an
animal is allocated to a project and ends with its fate at the completion of the project. Investigators have
an obligation to treat animals with respect and to consider their welfare when planning and conducting
projects.

2. Project Details
In this section you are asked to provide an overview of the project, its aims, design and intended
outcomes. It is important to use plain English to ensure that all AEC members understand the
proposed project.

application
2.2 Give a brief plain English description of the aims of this project, the proposed research design
and methods, and the anticipated outcomes

Anticipated Outcomes (include here projected benefits to humans, animals or the environment)
3. Animal Reduction
In this section you are asked to provide information about the number of animals, the species and
strain, the reasons why this number is necessary, whether there is an opportunity for sharing
tissues or animals and strategies you have utilized to minimize the overall number of animals you
plan to use.
3.1 Provide justification for the use of animals
Tick either ‘yes’ or ‘no’ for each justification (i – v) to indicate whether or not it applies to this
project.
Yes
No
(i) Significant understanding of human and / or animal biology?
(ii) Maintenance and improvement of human and / or animal health and welfare?
Yes
No
Yes
No
(iii) Achievement of educational objectives?
Yes
No
(iv) Improvement of animal management or production?
Yes
No
(v) Understanding, maintenance and improvement of the natural environment?
3.2 Originality. Is this a repetition of any previously performed study?
Yes
No
i.e. has this study previously been undertaken anywhere in the world, in Australia or at Murdoch? If
yes, briefly describe the previous work and justify why this needs to be repeated. If no, how has this
been determined?
3.3 Statistical Explanation
(i) To decide on the number of animals you plan to trap or net, have you utilized
Yes
No
a statistical calculation?
If yes, provide details, if no, describe how you have arrived at the number of animals necessary for this
project.
3.4 Animal Numbers
Species & Common Names

3.5 Do you plan to use any methods for capture other than trapping or Yes
netting?
If yes, Provide details
Total
No
3.6 Provide details of the locations at which you will be trapping or netting (for locations which
are remote or not readily identifiable to the lay person, provide details of the closest town or
identifiable location).
If you have identified more than one location, specify which animals will be targeted at each location.
3.7 Is this trapping or netting project in collaboration with any other Yes
No
project or institution?
If yes, Provide details about what part/s of the project are the responsibility of the other project or
institution and what elements will be part of this proposed project.
3.8 Rare and Endangered Species
Are any of the target species classified as rare or endangered?
Yes
No
If yes, specify which standard you have used (e.g. IUCN, DEC) and justify the use of the animals. Is
there a related, alternative, species suitable for the project?
Animals from an endangered species must not be used unless the research is of direct benefit to the
conservation of that species and will not further endanger the target species.
3.9 Estimate how many animals or what proportion of the animals will be released immediately
following capture without any further intervention
4. Replacement
In this section you are asked to explain what alternatives you have considered and why animals are
needed for the project.
No
4.1 Could conventional field observations be used to obtain the required results? Yes
If yes, why is trapping or netting being utilized? If no, why not?
4.2 Have alternatives to capturing animals been considered?
Why have these been rejected?
Yes
No
4.3 Will the results of this project assist to reduce numbers of animals for future
Yes
No
projects?
If yes, please specify
5. Refinement
In this section you are asked to identify and justify the impact of all aspects of the project on the
animal’s well-being from the time it is obtained until the project is completed. At each step provide
information about how impacts on the animals will be minimized.
5.1 Impact on the animal
Identify any potential impacts on the animal that may arise from the procedures being performed,
including harm, pain or distress. How will these be mitigated?
5.2 When is the safest time to release the animals? (Consider issues such as whether the species is
nocturnal and also seasonal issues including the reproductive biology of the species). Identify how
you have arrived at this judgment (e.g. literature review, expert advice, previous experience).
5.3 What precautions will be taken to minimize the impact of the weather, especially if animals
will remain in the net or trap for a period of time? Consider rain, cold, heat and other potential
weather impacts.
5.4 Is the trapping or netting likely to expose any of the animals to Yes
predation risks?
If yes, identify these risks and describe how you will minimize them.
No
5.5 Will animals be marked for identification or re-capture?
If yes, how will they be marked? What impact/s will this have to the animal? What alternatives have
been considered and rejected?
5.6Will any pharmacological agents or substances be administered?
If yes, provide details:
Agent / Substance
Anesthetic Agent
Post-Operative Analgesic
Tranquillizer
Antibiotic

Drug
Dosage
Frequency
Yes
No

6. Animal Management & Housing
6.1 Transport & housing
Will any of the animals be transported away from the site of capture?
Yes
No
If yes, provide details including:
How many animals will be transported? In what kinds of cages will they be transported? How far will
they be transported? What precautions will be taken against heat/cold and stress? Where will they be
transported to? Once they arrive at the location, will they remain part of this project or become part of
another project? Will they be released at the end or euthanized?
(i) Where will the animals be held?
(ii) How long will the animals are held in this location?
6.2 Animal Monitoring
(i) How will the animals be monitored during capture and handling?
(ii) What monitoring will be undertaken post-release?
6.3 Fate of Animals

differing species likely to be captured, outline for each species.
(ii) Fate of remaining animals at the end of the project
What will happen to any remaining animals once the research is completed?
