JOB DESCRIPTION FOR BI/DW ARCHITECTS
[Position ID: SRH-ARC-0012]
Data Architect
Job Purpose:
The Data Architect is responsible for analyzing data requirements and developing data models and
designs for Enterprise Data Warehouse. The individual in this role will translate business data
requirements into logical and physical data models, will understand and apply the concepts of proper data
modeling and database design, and gain a strong understanding of source data to ensure the design
approach results in a logical and efficient data model to support the business Intelligence capabilities.
Responsibilities:

















Analyzes business requirements and develops data strategy for optimized analytics needs
Participates in database design discussions, collaborating with developers to ensure the
database designs are accurate and that they support efficient reporting.
Assists in the identification and resolution of inefficiencies in database designs and determines
and implements solutions for database design problems.
Validates database designs for accuracy and performance, identifying opportunities for indexing,
partitioning, etc.
Analyzes the impact of source system data design changes as they relate to the logical and
physical data models and makes appropriate changes to existing data models.
Performs analysis to prevent data redundancy across systems and employs data integration best
practices.
Develops and maintains data architecture and administration standards including standardization
of table names, column names, data types, etc. Enforces semantic consistency across the
enterprise.
Performs data profiling, understands source data, and models data to accommodate specific
nuances that may exist.
Apply business strategy while driving technology strategy, balancing short term and long term
needs to ensure that the architecture can scale and evolve accordingly
Engage an end-to-end approach by connecting all the pieces of data to deliver the data while
leveraging all available assets
Evangelize Master Data Management concepts and lead the selection and implementation of
appropriate MDM tools and process.
Works with implementation team to ensure smooth deployment of data models and ensures
resolution of outstanding issues.
Employs an enterprise-wide approach to data architecture.
Works with data warehouse architects to create dimensional data models for optimized business
intelligence
Works with big data leads / engineers to evolve traditional BI practices to evolving big data needs
Performs other duties as assigned.
Comfortable within a fast-moving growth environment.
Required Skills
























Bachelor's degree in Information Science (or related field) or equivalent proven experience.
Minimum of 8 and above years' experience in a professional development environment having
participated in all facets of the software development life cycle.
Minimum of five years’ information technology development and SQL experience.
Minimum of five years’ experience with ERwin, ER/Studio or similar data modeling tools.
Experience developing/analyzing stored procedures and relational database programming.
Experience with education based ERP or similar products.
Experience modeling conforming dimensions and Type 2 (slowly changing dimension) data.
Must be visionary and strategic in approach, and demonstrated ability to apply data architectural
disciplines to solve business problems.
Strong understanding of implementation processes and best practices in Enterprise Architecture
Must work independently with minimal direction with superior organizational skills
Strong relationship building and mentoring skills with the ability to drive change and issues
resolution.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
and Ability to articulate technical aspects in an executive manner to present to senior
management
Experience with enterprise architecture framework.
Established experience delivering information management solutions to large numbers of end
users
Experience with overall Application Architecture in Master Data Management (MDM) with
understanding of different components at the business, technology and data layers
Demonstrated understanding of enterprise data warehouse, big data, BI & analytics, content
management and data management
Experience with large-scale MPP data platforms; such as Teradata, Netezza, Microsoft PDW.
Proven experience of exploiting data from SAP systems & large-scale RDBMS databases; Oracle
&SQLServer.
Experience of NoSQL platforms including graph database, column database, key-value stores.
Proven experience of Data Integration and ETL technologies incl. BO Data Services, SSIS,
Talend, Pentaho. Experience of data management architectures, designs, and techniques for
Master Data & Meta Data.
Proven experience with Analytics software including SAS and/or SPSS.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent facilitation skills.
Ability to work as part of a team and interact effectively with others.
Data Warehouse Architect
Job Purpose:
To provide clients with data warehousing implementation and advisory services. The Architect will provide
technical expertise (development) and leadership (management) in the areas of Business Intelligence
and Data Warehousing. The Architect will act as the technical expert while planning and executing,
including leading and building a team with technical oversight of more junior level consultants and
developers alike. Additionally, the Architect will be the SME (Subject Matter Expert) interfacing with the
client to ensure overall technical project success. Also, the architect will recommend better practices and
methodology related to building and maintaining data warehouses.
Responsibilities:










Lead development, design, execution and implementation of department or enterprise wide data
warehouses.
Work with developers to create database views as necessary.
Develop, manage, and update data models, including physical and logical models of the data
warehouse/s, data mart(s), staging area, and source systems (as necessary) to meet new and
changing business requirements
Serve as the technical expert for team members and clients as needed
Act as Technical Team Lead and technical manager of more junior consultants and developers.
Working extensively with client(s) to understand their needs and processes, delivering tactical
and strategic solutions to add value to their processes through business intelligence
Participate in guiding projects through full life-cycle, including performing technical management,
guiding clients through the development cycle and overseeing project teams
Architecting and development of methodology, best practices etc. to help clients in these areas.
Comfortable within a fast-moving growth environment.
Excellent oral and written communication skills are a requirement.
Skills, Experience & Requirements:











Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent plus 5 years’ experience or;
Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent plus 2 years’ experience.
5+ Years of extensive knowledge and hands on experience with one or more ETL tool
(Informatica, DataStage, Ab initio, Talend).
5+ Years of extensive knowledge and hands on experience with a BI tool (MicroStrategy,
Cognos, Business Objects)
Expertise in data visualization preferred - .preferably TIBCO Spotfire, Tableau
Expertise in data modeling concepts (star schema, snowflake schemas, normalized & denormalized data models),
Expertise in data modeling tools such as Erwin
Establish approach for capturing and maintaining metadata from all data warehousing
components
Implement dimensional models, including aggregation and indexing strategies
Recommend strategy for database security.
Extensive knowledge with design and development experience on scripting languages like
Shell/Perl.
Familiarity with developing extended warehouses using big data solutions like Hadoop.
