VETT 134: Veterinary Anesthesia and Surgical Assistance II Week Six Coursework and Assignments 1) Read Chapter Four: Anesthetic Equipment – Part One in the Thomas and Lerche text, pages 95 to 116. When you have completed Chapter Six, you should be able to: A) Identify equipment that is used for anesthetic induction, endotracheal intubation, and anesthetic maintenance. B) Choose and prepare an appropriate endotracheal tube for a dog, cat, horse, or cow. C) List the reasons for and advantages of endotracheal intubation. D) Describe the four basic anesthetic machine systems, and identify the parts of each system. E) Describe the basic operation of an anesthetic machine. F) Trace the flow of oxygen through an anesthetic machine and patient breathing circuit for rebreathing and non-rebreathing systems. G) Describe the function and use of each component of an anesthetic machine, anesthetic masks, and anesthetic chambers. H) Explain the use of the oxygen supply of an anesthetic machine, including safety concerns associated with compressed gas cylinders. I) Explain differences between a rebreathing and a non-rebreathing system with regard to equipment, gas flow, advantages, disadvantages, and indications for use. J) Identify the function and use of each component of commonly used rebreathing and non-rebreathing circuits. K) Differentiate between a precision and a nonprecision vaporizer, and recognize the rationale for using each. L) Compare and contrast vaporizer-out-of-circuit (VOC) and vaporizer-incircuit (VIC) vaporizers in terms of setup, use, and agents administered in each of these systems. M) Identify factors that affect anesthetic vaporizer output. N) Explain the impact of oxygen flow rates on anesthetic concentration within the breathing circuit, changes in anesthetic depth, patient safety, and waste gas production. O) List oxygen flow rates for each common domestic species, breathing system, and period of an anesthetic event. P) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of closed and semiclosed rebreathing systems. Q) Explain the procedure that should be followed to prepare an anesthetic machine for use. R) Describe the proper maintenance procedures for anesthetic machines and associated equipment. S) Be able to define, describe, or apply the flowing terms or concepts: Anesthetic chambers Anesthetic masks Anesthetic vaporizer Asphyxiation Atelectasis Ayre’s T-piece Bain block (see Universal control arm) Bain coaxial circuit Breathing circuit Breathing tubes Carbon dioxide absorber canister Closed rebreathing system Common gas outlet Compressed gas cylinders Compressed gas supply Endotracheal tube Flowmeter Fresh gas inlet Jackson–Rees circuit Lack circuit Laryngoscope Line pressure gauge Magill circuit Mapleson classification system Non-rebreathing system Norman mask elbow Oxygen flush valve Pop-off occlusion valve Pop-off valve Pressure manometer Pressure-reducing valve Rebreathing system Reservoir bag Respiratory minute volume Scavenging system Semiclosed rebreathing system Supraglottic airway device Tank pressure gauge Tidal volume (VT) Unidirectional valves Universal control arm (Bain block) Vaporizer-in-circuit Vaporizer-out-of-circuit 2) Read Chapter Three: Operating Room Personnel in the Tear text, pages 85 to 100. When you have completed Chapter Three, you should be able to: A) Discuss personal preparation for duties as a surgical nurse. B) Describe proper attire in the surgical area. C) Define endogenous and exogenous threats to asepsis. D) Explain the general guidelines for personal hygiene of veterinary surgical personnel. E) Describe and perform a surgical hand scrub. F) Explain and perform a surgical hand rub. G) Describe the different types of surgical hand prep solutions. H) Explain and demonstrate the process to aseptically dry hands and arms after performing a surgical hand scrub or rub. I) Describe and demonstrate the procedure for donning a surgical gown. J) Describe and perform open and closed gloving. K) Define and perform assisted surgical gloving. L) Be able to define, describe, or apply the flowing terms or concepts: Endogenous contamination Exogenous contamination Surgical hand rub Surgical hand scrub Surgical nurse 3) Watch the Week Six presentations on the reading in the Thomas and Lerche, and Tear texts. 4) Successfully complete Quiz 6 over Chapter Three in the Tear text. 5) When you have completed all the coursework and assignments for Week Six you should begin the Week Seven coursework.
