Date Insert your state minister’s name and address, also send to Federal Minister Dear Minister As a compassionate consumer I am horrified to learn the ugly reality behind battery eggs and broiler chickens in this country. Chickens have recently been found to be as smart as some dogs, yet we discriminate against them based on economic reasons. It is appalling that right now 11 million laying hens are unable to even stretch their wings, dust bathe or lay their eggs in private. All behaviours that are important to the physical and mental well being of the chicken. It shames me to learn that 420 million baby chickens a year destined for consumption are packed into ammonia filled sheds, where selective breeding and high growth feed results in unnaturally rapid growth rates causing bone deformities, fractures, hip dislocations, and diseases. Professor John Webster of the University of Bristol School of Veterinary Science has stated that “Broilers are the only livestock that are in chronic pain for the last 20% of their lives". How can it be that our animal welfare legislation in this state does not provide equal protection to all animals from acts of cruelty? I am outraged that chicken industry operators are not subject to the same animal welfare legal obligations that are required by every other member of society. As a consumer I will not support industries that prevent animals from satisfying their behavioral needs and I am convinced that as more Australians learn about the cruel conditions under which chickens are forced to exist they too will not support this industry. I implore you implement meaningful changes that prevent animal cruelty rather than provide for it. I look forward to your response. Yours sincerely Name Address
