Major scientific objectives

To characterize space-time variations in aerosols over northern India, originating from a
complex mixture of anthropogenic pollutants and mineral dust, using ground-based in-situ
and remote sensing techniques along with the modeling tools.

To study aerosol and cloud microphysics in the focus of Aerosol-Cloud-Climate interactions.

To estimate atmospheric aerosol forcing during different sky conditions in the perspective
to understand their implications for the environment on regional and global scales.

To estimate the carrying capacity of the region from air quality vis-à-vis the emissions.


Existing Instruments

OC/EC analyzer for organic and elemental carbon measurements

Pyrenomter for direct short-wave solar flux measurement


Ceilometer for cloud microphysics characterization along with the measurements of cloud
top and bottom height (cloud thickness)
Optical Particle Counter (OPC) for aerosol number and mass size distributions

High Volume Sampler (HVS) for total suspended particulate matters (TSPM)

PM10 aerosol sampler for the mass of particulate matters of size <10 µm

PM2.5 aerosol sampler for the mass of particulate matters of size <2.5 µm

Surface meteorology using Automatic Weather Station (AWS).


Sun/sky radiometer for various columnar aerosol optical and radiative properties

Mini-LIDAR system for vertical profile of aerosols
Model studies:

Optical Properties of Aerosol and Cloud (OPAC) model, developed by Hess et al., [1998] is
using for the estimation of crucial aerosol optical parameters under different environmental
conditions, which are the key responsible for forcing estimation.

Santa Barbara DISORT Atmospheric Radiative Transfer (SBDART) model, developed by
Ricchiazzi et al., [1998] is using for the estimation of atmospheric forcing in different sky
conditions.
