The
respiration rate
is the number of
breaths a person
takes per minute
 Respiration
is the process by which oxygen is
taken in and carbon dioxide is given out.
>>Types of respiration:
 External respiration : involve exchange of
respiratory gases ; between lung and blood.
 Internal respiration : involve exchange of
gases between blood and tissues.
 Patient
should be unaware about checking of
his/her respiratory rate.
 Count for a full minute.
 Normal
respiration rates at rest range from
15 to 20 breaths per minute.
 In cardio pulmonary illness it can be a very
reliable marker of disease activity
 Respiration
rates over 25 or under 12
breaths per minute (when at rest) may be
considered as abnormal.
 Respiration
rates may increase with fever,
illness, etc.
 When checking respiration, also note
whether a person has any difficulty in
breathing.
 Newborns-
40 to 80 respirations per minute.
 Infants – 30 respirations per minute.
 Age 5 – 25 respirations per minute.
 Adults – 12 to 18 respirations per minute.
 Increased
respiratory rate:
 Pulmonary or cardiac diseases
 Acidosis
 Anaemia
 Fever
 Stress
 Drugs(stimulants & salicylates)
 Cheyne
– stokes respiration
 Biots (cluster) respiration
 Kussmaul respiratory hyperpnea
 Apneustic respiration
 Ataxic respiration
