DAMAGE CHARACTERISTIC

DISEASE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

During
severe
infection,
become unfit for field planting

Generally, the fungi are weak parasites
that thrive on poorly nourished palms
which are physiologically weak to resist
fungal infection.
Practice proper cultural management
to prevent leaf spot.
seedlings
APPEARANCE

Prevention
Infect both young and old palms; affects
the
leaves
thereby
reducing
the
photosynthetic activity of palms

Space seedling at 60 x 60 cm triangular
distance to provide adequate room for
developing palms.

Prune and collect damaged leaves and
burn severely infected seedlings in
nursery.
Spots enlarge and fuse making the leaf appear
blighted or burnt
Leaf spot caused by Pestalozzia
palmarum Cke. & Grev. Appear first as
small yellowish brown, circular to oblong
spots on leaflet. Spots gradually turn
brown with ashen gray center surrounded
by dark brown bands. Spots enlarge and
fuse making the leaf appear blighted or
burnt.
Prune damaged leaves and burn
Conidia of P. palmarum

Small yellowish brown, circular to oblong spots
on leaves initial symptom of disease
Leaf spot caused by Helminthosporium
sp. are small, dark brown sunken necrotic
. Spots gradually enlarge to form blight

Do not overgrow seedlings in nursery,
overcrowding predisposes young palms to
infection.

Fertilized the seedlings to improve their
vegetative growth, vigor & resistance to
the disease.
Control

Apply recommended fertilizer both for
coconut seedlings and field planted palms.

Spray fungicides such as Vitigran Blue,
Captan 500, Daconil 2787 at 3tbsp per
gallon of water every 15 days for leaf spot
still occurring despite fertilizer application
