*ROTIMI renamed OLANIYI
A young dynamic Nigerian lady presently a Senior Lecturer in the employment of the Federal
University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) in Nigeria, my profile is presented without been immodest. I
have consistently been a recipient of scholarships and fellowships for my academic training. I have
worked and still work with field crops. I am comfortable with field research, screenhouse and
laboratory studies, controlling plant diseases incited by nematodes and fungi. My PhD research was a
first report in Nigeria and has since been a baseline for strategic plantain research development for
sustainable production of the crop. I have collaborated with international NGO and developed
institutions since 1993, and facilitated e-networking of plantain researchers in Nigeria since 2004.

RESEARCH:
(a) Research in progress (with brief description of the research projects)
1. Effects of paring and types of organic mulch on nematode infection, growth, yield and yield
quality of plantain.
FUNDED BY THE CENTRE FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (CERAD) OF THE
FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, AKURE, NIGERIA.
Even though plantain is highly susceptible to plant parasitic nematodes, the smallholders are not aware
of the nematode problems due to the "hidden" nature; destroying the root system leading to yield loss
and toppling of plants. Improved cultural practice including paring and mulching has been advocated in
managing plant parasitic nematodes on plantain, in order to improve and sustain yields. Farmers fear
that paring may impair plant growth and yield. Since mulch improves plantain growth, its benefit on
pared sucker growth and yield needs to be demonstrated in the field in order to make paring an
acceptable option to farmers. Experimental fields are also being used for teaching and demonstration.
2. The effect of paring on nematode re-infection of sucker planting material and the influence of
mulching on yield loss of plantain caused by plant parasitic nematodes in southwestern Nigeria
FUNDED BY THE INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR SCIENCE (IFS), SWEDEN
The effect of mulch and nursery duration of pared suckers is being assessed on the establishment of
pared suckers in the field, rate of nematode establishment on and damage to root and corm of plants
from planting till harvest of the first crop. Suckers purchased from farmers’ field and pared (peeling of
the outer skin of corm) in order to reduce nematode inoculum level in the planting materials were used
to establish trial. In another experiment, production loss related to Pratylenchus coffeae, considered to
be the most destructive species on plantain in Nigeria, will be quantified for the first time under field
conditions. A Nematology laboratory has been set up with the IFS grant in the Department of Crop,
Soil and Pest Management at FUTA. The established experimental fields have also been available and
used for demonstration and teaching. Results of the project will provide information for strategic
planning in the improvement and sustainable plantain production in Nigeria. This would ensure food
security, thereby providing more income to the small holder farmers who produce the crop, as well as
improve their quality of life. Plantain is an important food crop in West Africa and as such, results of
this project will be highly relevant to the West-Africa sub-region.

3. Managing nematode infection on Musa spp with Arbuscular Mychorrhizal Fungi (AMF),
organic mulches and plant extracts.
SELF FINANCED
The effect of the AMF on growth of and managing plant parasitic nematodes on three Musa cultivars is
being investigated at the Teaching and Research farm of the Federal University of Technology, Akure
in Nigeria. These cultivars are a False Horn plantain (“Agbagba”), A French plantain, and “Paranta” a
local dessert banana cultivar. It is expected that the result would be useful for recommendation to
subsistence farmers who engage in planting the crops. The use of AMF may be a good substitute to the
bulky recommended organic mulch. The extract of Acalypha wilkesiana might better improve root
health of Musa, thereby enhancing yield and plantation longevity.
