“Therefore let him who
thinks he stands take
heed lest he fall” (1
Corinthians 10:12).
T – otal Depravity
U – nconditional Election
L – imited Atonement
I – rresistible Grace
P – erseverance of Saints
1. “Those whom God hath accepted in the beloved,
effectually called and sanctified by his Spirit, and given
the precious faith of his elect unto, can neither totally
nor finally fall from the state of grace, but shall
certainly persevere therein to the end, and be eternally
saved, seeing the gifts and callings of God are without
repentance (whence he still begets and nourisheth in
them faith, repentance, love, joy, hope, and all the
graces of the Spirit to immortality), and though many
storms and floods arise and beat against them, yet they
shall never be able to take them off that foundation and
rock which by faith they are fastened upon;”
“notwithstanding, through unbelief and the
temptations of Satan, the sensible sight of the light
and love of God may for a time be clouded and
obscured from them, yet it is still the same, and they
shall be sure to be kept by the power of God unto
salvation, where they shall enjoy their purchased
possession, they being engraven upon the palm of
his hands, and their names having been written in
the book of life from all eternity” (The Philadelphia
Confession of Faith, pp. 45 & 46).
One Can Fall From Grace
You Can Fall!
One Can Fall From Grace
1) Paul said so!
“You have become estranged from Christ, you
who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen
from grace” (Galatians 5:4).
Estranged – “to be severed from, separated from,
discharged from, loosed from, any one; to terminate
all intercourse with one” (Thayer, p. 336).
Fallen – “metaphorically, to fall from a thing, to
lose it” (Thayer, p. 198).
One Can Fall From Grace
2) Notice these warnings.
“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times
some will depart from the faith, giving heed to
deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons” (1
Timothy 4:1).
“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed
lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12).
One Can Fall From Grace
3) Impossible to renew some.
“For it is impossible for those who were once
enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and
have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have
tasted the good word of God and the powers of the
age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again
to repentance, since they crucify again for
themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open
shame” (Hebrews 6:4-6).
One Can Fall From Grace
4) Can depart & be cut off.
“Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an
evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living
God” (Hebrews 3:12).
“Therefore consider the goodness and severity of
God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you,
goodness, if you continue in His goodness.
Otherwise you also will be cut off” (Romans 11:22).

Salvation Conditional - If
You Can Fall!
Salvation Conditional – If
1) Notice a few passages:
“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him,
“If you abide in My word, you are My disciples
indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth
shall make you free” (John 8:31,32).
“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you;
abide in My love. If you keep My commandments,
you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My
Father’s commandments and abide in His love”
(John 15:9,10).
Salvation Conditional – If
“This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him,
We shall also live with Him. If we endure, We shall also
reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. If
we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny
Himself” (2 Timothy 2:11-13).
“And you, who once were alienated and enemies in
your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled
in the body of His flesh through death, to present you
holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight—if
indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and
steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the
gospel which you heard, which was preached to every
creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a
minister” (Colossians 1:21-23).
Salvation Conditional – If
2) If unfaithful –
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its
flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for
nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot
by men” (Matthew 5:13).
“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear
fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can
you, unless you abide in Me. “I am the vine, you are the
branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears
much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If
anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch
and is withered; and they gather them and throw them
into the fire, and they are burned” (John 15:4-6).
Salvation Conditional – If
3) One can neglect salvation.
“Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to
the things we have heard, lest we drift away. For if
the word spoken through angels proved steadfast,
and every transgression and disobedience received a
just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so
great a salvation, which at the first began to be
spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by
those who heard Him” (Hebrews 2:1-3).

Can Be Entangled Again
You Can Fall!
Can Be Entangled Again
1) Some escape then return.
“For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the
world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and
overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the
beginning. For it would have been better for them not to
have known the way of righteousness, than having
known it, to turn from the holy commandment
delivered to them. But it has happened to them
according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own
vomit,” and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in
the mire” (2 Peter 2:20-22).
Can Be Entangled Again
2) One can sin willfully.
“For if we sin willfully after we have received the
knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a
sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of
judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour
the adversaries” (Hebrews 10:26,27).
Can Be Entangled Again
3) Can depart the faith, etc.
“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times
some will depart from the faith, giving heed to
deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons” (1
Timothy 4:1).
“But if anyone does not provide for his own, and
especially for those of his household, he has denied
the faith and is worse than an unbeliever” (1
Timothy 5:8).
Can Be Entangled Again
4) An example.
“Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was
baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed,
seeing the miracles and signs which were done…And
when Simon saw that through the laying on of the
apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered
them money, saying, “Give me this power also, that
anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy
Spirit.” But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with
you, because you thought that the gift of God could be
purchased with money!” (Acts 8:13,18-20).

Name Can Be Removed
Name Can Be Removed
1) Name must be written in Book of
life.
“And anyone not found written in the Book of
Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation
20:15).
Book of Life – “the book in which the names of
those are recorded to whom eternal life has been
decreed” (Thayer, p. 274).
Name Can Be Removed
2) Names can be blotted out.
“He who overcomes shall be clothed in white
garments, and I will not blot out his name from the
Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My
Father and before His angels” (Revelation 3:5).
“and if anyone takes away from the words of the
book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part
from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from
the things which are written in this book”
(Revelation 22:19).

3) Same principle in the O. T.
“Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Oh,
these people have committed a great sin, and have
made for themselves a god of gold! Yet now, if You
will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out
of Your book which You have written.” And the
Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against
Me, I will blot him out of My book” (Exodus 32:3133).

1) Paul knew he could be lost.
“But I discipline my body and bring it into
subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I
myself should become disqualified” (1 Corinthians
9:27).
Disqualified – “castaway,” R.V. “rejected” (i.e.,
disapproved, and so rejected from present
testimony, with loss of future reward” (Vine, p.
175).

2) Jesus says we can grow cold.
“Then many false prophets will rise up and
deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound,
the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures
to the end shall be saved” (Matthew 24:11-13).

3) One can fall short.
“And to whom did He swear that they would not
enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we
see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His
rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come
short of it” (Hebrews 3:18,19; 4:1).

Who First Taught This?
Who First Taught This?
1) It was Satan!
“Now the serpent was more cunning than any
beast of the field which the Lord God had made.
And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said,
‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” And
the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the
fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of
the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has
said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest
you die.’” Then the serpent said to the woman, “You
will not surely die” (Genesis 3:1-4).
Who First Taught This?
2) He is trying to destroy us.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary
the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking
whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the
faith, knowing that the same sufferings are
experienced by your brotherhood in the world” (1
Peter 5:8,9).
“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be
able to stand against the wiles of the devil”
(Ephesians 6:11).
Who First Taught This?
3) He will use his servants to achieve
his goal – our destruction.
“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers,
transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.
And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms
himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no
great thing if his ministers also transform
themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose
end will be according to their works” (2 Corinthians
11:13-15).

“And I give them eternal life, and they shall never
perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My
hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is
greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them
