Changes During Adolescence
Adolescence – the stage between
childhood and adulthood
Puberty
 Average
age between 9-13 yrs. old
 The beginning of adolescence.
 When males/females become physically
able to reproduce.
 Caused by the release of hormones.
(testosterone, estrogen)
Physical Changes
 Primary
Sex Characteristics: Males
produce sperm, females produce
(mature) ovum.
 Secondary Sex Characteristics: Body
hair, development of breasts,
muscles, widening of chest/shoulders,
deepening of voice.
Mental Changes
 Brain
reaches adult size and weight.
 Thinking skills and memory
increase.
 Increased awareness and judgment
Emotional/Social Changes
 Strong,
up and down emotions
 Difficulty in communicating thoughts
and feelings
 Formation of beliefs, goals, values
 Development of serious peer
relationships
 Increased
consideration of others
