Operations Research and Nature inspired Search Algorithms: A Lethal combination for solving large sized problems Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwar i Operations Research aims to provide a rational basis for decision making by seeking to understand and structure complex situations and improvise the system performance in a variety of industries such as airlines, pharmaceuticals, logistics companies, petrochemical industries, economic planning, military and financial services etc. The complexity of combinatorial optimization problems increases exponentially with the increase in the number of variables and constraints. This tends the problem to be computationally expensive and intractable in polynomial time which makes it NP­hard. In such cases, nature inspired algorithms provide huge possibility to explore and exploit non­convex discrete solution spaces. Hence, it becomes imperative to solve the problem using Meta heuristics or Nature­inspired algorithms. In this regard, we discuss about popularly known pure and hybrid meta heuristic approaches including Genetic algorithm, Particle swarm optimization, Ant colony optimization and Bee colony optimization etc. and how they can be intelligently used to handlelarge scale real world problems to deal with complex and uncertain environment.
