AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION
If your eye care professional has informed you that you have age-related macular degeneration
(AMD) there are several things you should know. AMD is the leading cause of irreversible blindness
in Americans 65 years of age or older. The central fine vision required for “straight ahead” viewing
such as reading and driving is damaged in this condition.
There is no “cure” for AMD but NOW there is a way to lessen the risk of vision loss from this disease.
In October 2001, the National Eye Institute (NEI), one of the United States government's National
Institutes of Health, completed a major ten-year study, the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS).
AREDS proved that people at high risk of developing advanced stages of AMD lowered their risk by
about 25 percent when treated with certain antioxidant vitamins and minerals.
AREDS recommends the following: 500 milligrams of vitamin C; 400 international units of vitamin E;
15 milligrams of beta-carotene; 80 milligrams of zinc as zinc oxide; and two milligrams of copper as
cupric oxide.
Some eye care professionals also recommend lutein, an antioxidant carotenoid found in fruits and
green leafy vegetables, in addition to the AREDS formula because lutein is one of the dominant
pigments found in the macular region of the healthy retina. However, lutein was not available when
the AREDS study was started and therefore there is no proof it is effective. Your eye care
professional will help you with this decision.
