British Columbia’s Geological Histories & Landscape as Story Date: _________________
(Adapted inquiry from BC Science Connections 8)
Block:____
Essential Question: How do different ways of knowing such as First Peoples’ oral
traditions, technology & western science perspectives help build our
understanding of geographical landscapes?
Plate tectonics explains British Columbia’s geological processes. And those
processes have quite literally shaped the landscapes- the places that we
know, walk, explore and live today!
However, long before this theory was invented, First Peoples have used
surround geography to anchor significant events and tell stories involving both the
physical world and the spiritual world. For example, the story of T’akt’akmuten tl’a
(Black Tusk Mountain), is part of Squamish mythology, involving the mythological
Thunderbird, which was said to land on its peak and this is a sacred site to the
Squamish people. There are also oral histories to explain the Tsilxwm (Tantalus
Range) in Squamish territory and Nch’kay’ (Mount Garibaldi)
Procedure
1. Explore an examples of a geologically unique region (The Tantalus Range
Mountains, The Coast Mountains, The Rocky Mountains, Haida Gwaii, The Gulf
Islands etc) and identify 1-3 interesting geological formations within this region
(Mount Garibladi, The Stawamus Chief, The Endeavour Hydrothermal vent, The
Queen Charlotte Fault etc).
Make a list of questions you want to find out about the region and the geological
formations there.
Be sure to include:




Where in B.C are these formations located?
How do plate tectonic explain their formation?
What are the key characteristics of these formations
Describe the population here, what has brought people here, what cultures call here
home?
2. Research how western science would study and explain these formations.
Be sure to include:


What technology or tools are currently used these formations?
What are the economic, social and cultural characteristics associated with this
region today?
3. Investigate and find traditional oral histories and traditional ecological knowledge of the
First Peoples from these traditional territories.
Be sure to include:



How are First Peoples connected to this place?
How have First Peoples relied on their traditional ecological knowledge to survive in
this area?
What types of traditional art, carvings, ceremonies, foods and stories are
associated with this place?
4. Conclude & CommunicateDecide how you will share your findings. (a poster, a powerpoint, a brochure, a video
etc.)
Use the data you have gathered AND the format of your choice to reflect &
respond to the essential question: How do different ways of knowing such as
First Peoples’ oral traditions, technology & western science perspectives help
build our understanding of place?
-be sure to support your opinions with evidence from your research, specific details
& examples AND a bibliography
