DISCUSSION This is the opportunity for the Vision Force to enlist support of thousands of people as well as city, county, and state officials to help achieve the goals of Education & Lifelong Learning for our community ACTION None Organizations / initiatives already addressing one or more elements of the Vision The names of vision force members have been assigned as known and members are requested to sign up to obtain information on organizations / initiatives not currently assigned. Vision Force members are also requested to suggest additional that should be added to the inventory. Our recorder / facilitator Judy Newman will coordinate and follow up on the gathering of the needed information Future steps will include categorizing the programs and assessing how their respective strategies can be leveraged to achieve the Vision Information should include: Their objectives / mission Short term & long term goals Strategic direction How does the organization / initiative serve to achieve the our Vision for Education Number of people served and anticipated to be served Names of members associated with the process Jim Burke Education Foundation Focus: The transition from early childhood to elementary to junior high to high school to junior college to university education Participants: Education leaders, Foundation members (including several members of the Vision Force Wendy Wayne Cal State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) -Various initiatives addressing the transition from high school to college Kern Education Partnership Program Testing coordination (Issue: Incompatible student IDs) Upward Bound HEP (High School Equivalency Program) Jim George West High School – CAP Grant Focus: Transition from junior high to high school Participants: CSUB Member needed Kern County Local Childcare Planning Council Focus: Early childhood education Resource to Vision Force: Strategic Plan; Needs Assessment Tech Prep Consortium Focus: Career education (ag, nursing); articulation from high school to BC Participants: Kern High School District (KHSD), Bakersfield College (BC) Youth Council (Workforce Investment Council) Focus: Job training for (at risk) youth Resource: Preparing to develop a strategic plan Member needed Member needed Member needed (Organizations / Initiatives cont.) Kern County Superintendent of Schools (KCSOS) College Night – September 12 Focus: College Prep Larry Reider School to Career Focus: K-College; Career awareness and development Resource: Inventory of local programs Kern County Network for Children Resource: Annual needs assessment contains educational components Wendy Wayne CALWORKS / Education Advisory Committee Focus: Job training and placement (welfare to work) Resource: Assessments; Referral Matrix Member needed Community-Based Programs Junior Achievement Teacher Seminars: At Work Derricks to Desks Ag in the Classroom Member needed Susan Hershberger Member needed Member needed Center for Living and Learning Focus: Seniors; life-long learning Member needed ABC (American Board of Contractors) Focus: Job Training Participants: Trade associations; local employers Member needed ISSUES IDENTIFIED: Transition and articulation from K through higher education Contributing factors: number of school districts; lack of coordination; redundancy; political issues (local control) l Lack of awareness/understanding by parents of the education process Lack of awareness of the public of programs that are currently underway and their accomplishments Additional information and resource Material needed What are the boundaries of “Greater Bakersfield” Lou to bring a map Need for school statistics for “Greater Bakersfield” George Lusk to develop that information TOPIC Future meeting agendas DISCUSSION At a future meeting (date tbd) Lou requested that representatives from each of the levels of education (early childhood; elementary; high school, junior college; university; KCSOS) present an overview of how their educational mission fits into the overall educational structure. Suggested points to cover: governance relationship to overall education structure (barriers; synergies) funding, including amount of discretionary funding and funding challenges relationships with other organizations affecting the ability to provide a quality education major challenges and obstacles to accomplishing your objectives 1.
