Discovered psychrophilic bacteria (new theremal class of microorganisms)
The genus Moritella was named after R. Y. Morita in 1990 to recognize his contributions made to marine
microbiology by Sue Stevens in her Ph. D. thesis and was recognized by Gauthier et al. (Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol.
45:755-761). Formal publication of Moritella as a genera was made by Urakawa, H., K. Kita-Tsukamoto, S. E.
Steven, K. Ohwada, and R. R. Colwell in 1998 (FEMS Microbiol. Lett. 165:373-378).
The genus Paramoritella was named after R.Y. Morita in 2009, S. Hosoya, S. Suzuki, K. Adachi,. S. Matsuda,
and K. Kasai. Paramoritella alkaliphila gen. nov, a member of the Family Moritellaceae isolated in the Republic of
Palao. Int. J. Syst. Ecol. Microbiology 59:441-416. 2009.
