Course Description: This course is designed to follow the Common Core State Standards for
7th grade math. We will focus on the five domains in the Iowa Core Curriculum designated for
7th grade students to learn.
Rationale: The five domains include:
● Ratios and Proportional Relationships
● The Number System
● Expressions and Equations
● Geometry
● Statistics and Probability
Throughout the year there will be a tremendous focus on: (a) application of knowledge,
(b) essential questions and concepts, and (c) making real-world connections.
Course Schedule and Policies: This is a year-long course, which meets every day throughout
the academic year. Attendance is crucial, as math naturally builds on itself. If there is an
absence for any reason, the student is responsible for completing missed work, activities, and
making up instructional time.
Assignments and Grading: Assigned work out of the textbook is for practice. However,
assigned textbook work is always expected to be completed to ensure understanding. Only
assessments, tasks, and ixl grades will be included in the grade. The grade that a student receives
is based on true assessment and should represent learning. This year Chariton is doing the
Standards Referenced Grading. This is out of a four point rubric, which is located below. With
this type of assessment, we can demonstrate student learning within each strand of the Iowa Core
Curriculum.

Textbooks/Materials: A consumable textbook will be provided to each student. Students will
also gain online access to a virtual book as well as online activities, a home tutor, and video
animated examples. Students also all have access to work on ixl on their computers at home.
This is a website that lets you work on specific skills.
Course Expectations: Students are expected to arrive to class on time, with all necessary
materials. Every day a student should bring the following items: Planner, Pencil, Paper, Math
Book, Math Notebook and Calculator. Students are expected to treat each other and their
belongings with respect at all times.
Course Objectives/Outcomes:
● Ratios and Proportional Relationships
○ Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and
mathematical problems
● The Number System
○ Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add,
subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.
● Expressions and Equations
○ Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions
○ Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic
expressions and equations
● Geometry
○ Draw, construct, and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships
between them
○ Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface
area, and volume.

○ Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
○ Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
○ Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
○ Model with mathematics.
○ Use appropriate tools strategically.
○ Attend to precision.
○ Look for and make use of structure.
○ Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
