Multiplying Probabilities
Name________________________
Warm up
Calculate each probability.
1. Two cards are chosen at random without replacement from a pack of 52 playing.
If the first card chosen is an Ace, what is the probability the second card chosen is a
King?
2. A bag contains 5 red marbles, 4 green marbles and 1 blue marble. A marble is chosen at
random from the bag and replaced; then a second marble is chosen. What is the
probability that neither marble is blue?
3. A bag contains 3 red marbles and 4 blue marbles. Two marbles are drawn at random
without replacement. If the first marble drawn is blue, what is the probability the second
marble is also blue?
4. A die is thrown twice. What is the probability both numbers are prime?
Definitions
Dependent Events (such as removing marbles from a bag without replacement) are affected by
previous events.
Independent Events (such as a coin toss) are not affected by previous events
5. Classify each problem above as independent or independent events.
Example 1:
A drawer contains 3 red paperclips, 4 green paperclips, and 5 blue paperclips.
One paperclip is taken from the drawer and is NOT replaced. Another paperclip
is taken from the drawer. What is the probability that the first paperclip is red and
the second paperclip is blue?
Example 2:
A bag contains 5 red marbles, 4 green marbles and 1 blue marble. A marble is
chosen at random from the bag and replaced; then a second marble is chosen.
What is the probability both marbles are green?
Let’s look at probability a little differently and collect data from our class.
Summarize. Define and/or provide an example for each term.
