The Study of the microscopic
structures of tissues
Histological Grouping of
Tissue
• 1. Epithelial Tissue
• 2. Connective Tissue
• 3. Muscle
• 4. Nervous Tissue
Epithelial Tissue
• Tissue that covers a body surface or
lines a body cavity.
• Is named based on two criteria:
1. Cell shape
2. Cell layers
• Functions in: protection, absorption,
• filtration, excretion/secretion and as
a sensory receptor
Cell Layers
• 1. Simple: one cell layer
• 2. Stratified: two or more cell layers
• 3. Pseudostratified: one cell layer but
looks as if it has several layer .
Cell Shape
• 1. Cuboidal : cubed shaped cells
• 2. Columnar: column shaped cells
• 3. Stratified: flat scale shaped cells
Epithelial Slides Covered
 On ALL SLIDES BE
ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE
TYPE OF TISSUE AND
KNOW:
• CELL MEMBRANE,
• CYTOPLASM
• NUCLEUS
• Slides covered
• 1. Simple squamous
epithelium
• 2. Simple cuboidal
epithelium
• 3. Simple columnar
epithelium
• 4. Pseudostratified
ciliated columnar
epithelium Know: cilia,
goblet cells
• 5. Stratified squamous
epithelium
Simple Squamous Epithelium
•
Simple cuboidal epithelium
Simple columnar epithelium
Pseudostratified ciliated columnar
epithelium
Stratified squamous epithelium
Connective Tissue
• The most abundant and widely
distributed tissue
• Functions in: binding and support,
protection, insulation and
transportation
• Characterized by having few cells
scattered about a nonliving matrix.
Adipose Tissue
• Know
• Nucleus
• lipids
Aereolar Connective Tissue
•
• Know:
• Fiberblast
• Collagenous
fibers
• Elastic fibers
Blood
Bone
Hyaline Cartilage
•

•
•
Know:
Lacunae
Rubbery matrix
chondrocytes
Elastic Cartilage
• Know
• Lacunae
• Elastic fibery
matrix
• chondrocyte
Reticular Connective Tissue
• Know:
• Reticular cells
• Reticular fibers
Muscles
Divided into 3 categories:
1. Smooth
2. Cardiac

Nervous Tissue
The functional unit of nervous
tissue is the neuron
