EXCUSED VS. UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
Every school age child must be in attendance continuously for a period equal to the time which the
public/charter school to which the student is assigned is in session. The parent, guardian, or custodian of a
child shall notify the school of the reason for each known absence of the child, in accordance with local
school board policy.
The following absences are considered EXCUSED once the school has been notified:
 Illness of the student
 Doctor/Dentist Appointment
 Death in the immediate family
 Quarantine
 Approved educational opportunity*
 Court or Administrative proceedings
 Religious Holiday*
The following absences listed below and all other absences not listed above are considered UNEXCUSED
unless pre-approved with school personnel:





Bad Weather
Car Troubles
Oversleeping
Family Trips
Visiting family
*The following absences must be pre-approved ten days in advance.
It is the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian for all missing course work.
According to the North Carolina Compulsory Attendance Law (N.C.G.S-§115C-378) a parent or guardian may be
prosecuted in a criminal action if a student between the ages of 7 and 16 has more than 10 unexcused absences.
