The Christie NHS Foundation Trust
Skin and Soft Tissue Oncology
And Microsurgical Senior Fellowship
THE POST
This post is designed primarily to provide experience and training in specialised
oncologic plastic surgery and reconstructive plastic surgery and microsurgery at The
Christie NHS Foundation Trust which is a tertiary referral centre for the treatment of
cancer.
The successful candidate would gain considerable experience in all areas of
oncologic plastic surgery and microsurgical reconstruction, working closely with the
four Consultant Plastic Surgeons. There will be the opportunity to gain insight and
experience in the principles and techniques of modern Oncological practice through
the close relationship that exists with the other oncologic specialties and there are
exciting new opportunities to gain experience in treatments such as photodynamic
therapy, electrochemotherapy, laparoscopic ileo-inguinal dissection and surgery for
lymphoedema.
Possession of the FRCS(Plast) and/or CCT in Plastic Surgery, or an equivalent
recognised accreditation in Plastic Surgery is essential, and interest in research and
teaching is desirable. Candidates will have undergone recognised specialist training
and have experience in plastic surgery oncology including microvascular
reconstruction.
Candidates who are unable for personal reasons to work full time are eligible to
apply and, if successful, modification of the job content will be discussed on a
personal basis in consultation with the Consultant Body.
THE TRUST
The Christie NHS Foundation Trust
The Christie became a foundation trust on 1st April 2007 and was originally founded
in 1901. It is a specialist NHS cancer hospital offering high-quality diagnosis,
treatment and care for cancer patients, world-class research, and education in all
aspects of cancer care. Behind our ambitions to be one of the world's leading cancer
centres is a reputation for exceptional patient care and research, excellent
performance and financial management, together with a high profile and huge public
support. As the cancer centre for the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cancer
Page 2 of 11
Network it serves a population of 3.2 million. Our doctors run clinics at 14 associated
general hospitals. We register 12,500 new patients and treat 40,000 patients every
year. Our patients are referred from district general hospitals, having already had
their cancer diagnosed, and often with complex or rare cancer. Around 15% of our
patients are referred from outside Greater Manchester and Cheshire, and our private
patients unit (The Christie Clinic) provides care for patients from across the world.
Cancer services
The Christie provides specialist surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, palliative
medicine and supportive care. As one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the
world we deliver over 84,000 radiotherapy treatments a year. We deliver over 34,000
outpatient chemotherapy treatments and 6,600 admitted chemotherapy stays per
annum.
The Department of Surgery consists of plastic surgery, colorectal, urology and
gynaecology specialities, undertaking over 4000 surgical operations every year.
Each surgical speciality provides a tertiary referral service, providing a regional
service in soft tissue sarcomas and skin cancers, complex pelvic tumours, anal
cancers, penile and testicular tumours, complex renal tumours and advanced
gynaecological tumours. The department is unique in the degree of multi-disciplinary
surgery performed. We are one of only two hospitals in the country offering surgical
treatment for patients with pseudomyxoma - a very rare type of cancer. Since 2007
we have had a Da Vinci operating robot which is currently used to treat prostate and
uterine cancers. The department consists of one in-patient ward, a surgical day
case unit, a critical care unit and 5 operating theatres.
There is a new clinical trials unit and a new private facility (The Christie Clinic), both
opened in December 2010. The hospital has recently formed a joint partnership with
Health Care America (HCA) in order to improve the provision of private medicine and
surgery by the hospital and to increase income for the use of the trust.
Our Young Oncology Unit is one of only eight dedicated teenage cancer units in the
country. Only patients over the age of 16 years are treated surgically in the trust.
Development of skin services
This service at the Christie has a well established multidisciplinary approach to the
management of patients with skin cancer. This includes surgery, medical oncology
and clinical oncology; enabling the delivery of the highest quality of care to patients.
Parallel clinics with skin oncologists have been established for discussion of complex
skin tumours and nurse led support is provided. In addition, a unique Gorlin’s
syndrome MDT clinic is held once every 2 months.
We perform a large number of ileo-inguinal dissections for metastatic disease. Most
of these are currently performed laparoscopically.
There is further scope for integrated development of dermatological and plastics
clinics and a photodynamic therapy service with scope to develop specialist clinics
for patients who are immunocompromised.
The Christie is the GMMC Network lead for sentinel node biopsies and block
dissections. The post holder will gain experience in block dissections including ilioinguinal node dissections and sentinel node biopsy.
Key player in Europe
The Christie is a member of the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI)
which provides a forum for discussion and agreement amongst the leading cancer
centres in Europe as well as coordinating a number of specific projects. The OECI is
an important vehicle for taking forward the concept of comprehensive cancer centres
in Europe. We are the first centre in the UK to be voted onto the OEIC as a member
in June 2007.
Leading clinical trials unit
The Christie runs one of the largest clinical trials units in Europe for phase I/II cancer
trials, with around 1,200 patients going on new trials every year. This is set to double
over the next few years making us one of the largest clinical trials units in the world.
Plastic Surgery Research
We are currently building a comprehensive database of our skin cancer patients and
this would provide a great launching pad for the development of various research
projects within the Department.
Partner in the Manchester Cancer Research Centre
We are a partner in the Manchester Cancer Research Centre with The University of
Manchester, Paterson Institute for Cancer Research and Cancer Research UK. The
Manchester Cancer Research Centre brings together the expertise, ambition and
resources of our organisations and will be one of the world’s leading cancer research
institutes by 2015.
Education
We have a dedicated education unit and provide training for a wide range of pre and
post qualification staff.
Cancer Registry
We manage the North West Cancer Information Service (cancer registry) for the
whole of the North West region.
Manchester Versus Cancer alliance
In partnership with the NHS, local authorities and supporters we have established
the Manchester Versus Cancer alliance to help improve the early detection of
cancer. Research shows that around 500 lives across Greater Manchester could be
saved each year if local people went to their GP early with suspected symptoms.

Christie by the Clinical Director Dr Haji-Michael supported via a SLA for anaesthesia with
The University Hospital South Manchester. All Consultant Surgeons and Anaesthetists with
sessional commitments to the Christie Hospital are members of the Directorate of Surgery
and Anaesthetics in the division of Cancer Centre Services. The Clinical Director of Surgery
is Mr MS Wilson.
Plastic Surgery Department
The department of plastic surgery at The Christie has effectively two separate roles;
one is in the area of the management of skin and soft tissue tumours that need
removal and secondly, the team provides a reconstructive service for the
aforementioned group and for patients requiring reconstruction following breast,
colorectal, gynaecological and urological surgery. The team also integrates with the
NF1 and NF2 services and the facial palsy MDT. We have a unique MDT clinic for
the management of patients with Gorlin’s syndrome. We are in the process of setting
up a service for the surgical management of lymphoedema patients.
There is a year on year increase in the number of microsurgical reconstructions
being performed and the successful candidate would gain considerable experience
and training in microsurgery.
There is a monthly plastic surgery clinical meeting, a regular audit programme and a
teaching and education programme that the appointee would be actively involved in.
The Specialist Nurse Practitioner runs a suturing course for both undergraduate and
post graduate students.

multidisciplinary team within tumour and disease groups. Close collaboration exists
with the Departments of Medical Oncology (Divisional Director Dr Nick Slevin,
Clinical Director Dr Mike Leahy, and Clinical Oncology Clinical Director Dr John
Logue). In addition, clinical groups include endocrinology, paediatric and adolescent
oncology, palliative care, genetics and psychological medicine.
The Christie has both diagnostic and interventional radiological services including
ultrasound, radionuclide, CT, MR and PET scanning. Pathology services include
histopathology, cytology, haematology and clinical chemistry.

Disease Groups
In additional to the clinical services, the Trust actively supports the inclusion of
patients in clinical trials and development of integrated laboratory and clinical
research. To facilitate these objectives and advise on best clinical practice,
clinicians are encouraged to join disease groups (DG’s) relevant to their area of
expertise. The DG’s and the clinical trials support unit are served by statisticians,
data managers and research nurses.

TEACHING AND MEDICAL EDUCATION
The Christie is a designated teaching hospital and the surgical departments play an
active role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching supporting the University of
Manchester Medical School. It is expected that the appointee will take equal
responsibility for the educational supervision of surgical trainees and encourage
trainees to be involved in postgraduate activities. The Sarcoma/Melanoma DG at the
Christie hospital co-ordinates annual updates for clinicians throughout the region.
The Christie is committed to providing travel and subsistence to support continuing
medical education.
The Christie has library facilities staffed by professional librarians offering a full range
of services including books, journals and facilities for personal and commissioned
computer on line searches. The Medical Illustration departments are equipped with
modern facilities for computer generated graphics and slide making facilities with
professional medical artists to assist in the preparation of material for teaching,
presentation and publication.
We run a national meeting for melanoma, The Manchester Melanoma surgery
Meeting.

in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The Paterson Institute houses a series of
laboratories some funded by the Cancer Research Campaign, others by a variety of
charitable sources including the Christie hospital Endowment Fund. The Institute
has recently been restructured and is now under the guidance of Professor R.
