Le NGI (Jacquin et al., Neuron 1996, Fortin et al. Nat. Neurosc, 1999) a montré que l’interruption du programme embryonnaire de développement Krox-20/Hox élimine un oscillateur respiratoire « parafacial » (localisé à proximité du noyau facial, Dominguez del Toro et al. J. Neurosci., 2001) antiapnéique (qui évite les apnées du nourrisson). Un autre oscillateur respiratoire, le complexe de Pre-Bötzinger (Thoby-Brisson et al., J. Neurosci., 2005) prévient chez l’adulte les apnées du sommeil (L. McKay et al., Nat. Neurosc., 2005). L. McKay effectue commence un post-doctorat au NGI pour caractériser un stade de maturation (pendant la première semaine post-natale chez la souris) après lequel l’oscillateur Pre-Bötzinger semble prédominer.
