The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ • 3:4-6 – Paul’s confidence in the flesh • 3:4 Though I also might have confidence in the flesh. • Surprising point – One does not expect Paul to argue this point. It is important for his point in vss 7-11. • If anyone thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, • I more so “I may have more confidence in the flesh.” The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ • 3:7-11 – Paul’s choice of confidence in Christ. • 3:7 – But these I have counted loss for Christ • But – Paul rejects confidence in the flesh • These - what things were gain to me • I have counted loss – considered useless. • For Christ – for the sake of Christ’s righteousness. The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ • 3:7-11 – Paul’s choice of confidence in Christ • 3:8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. • Yet indeed I count all things loss • For the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord – “for the goal of knowing” • For whom I have suffered the loss of all things “I suffered because of Jesus” • And [I] count them as rubbish • That I may gain Christ “in order that” • And [that I may] be found in Him The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ • 3:8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. • Yet indeed I count all things loss • For the knowledge of Christ • And [that I may] be found in Him • Not having my own righteousness “not be found in Him by means of having my own” • Which is from the law • But [by means of having] that [righteousness] • which is through faith in Christ • The righteousness which is from God by faith The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ • 3:8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. • Yet indeed I count all things loss • For the knowledge of Christ • That I may know Him “in order to know Him” • And the power of His resurrection • And the fellowship of His sufferings • Being conformed to His death “by means of being conformed” • If by any means I may attain to the resurrection of the dead.
