• To write the same things to you – the command
• To me is not tedious
• To you it is safe – this explains why Paul is
giving them this command.
The Epistle to the Philippians
Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ
• 3:1-3 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness
• 3:2-3 – The true believer confides only in Jesus.
• For we are the circumcision.
• For – the reason to beware of the mutilation
• Who worship God in the Spirit – acceptable
worship, unlike what “dogs” give.
• Who rejoice in Christ Jesus – grateful for
Christ’s sacrifice, instead of opposing it.
• Who have no confidence in the flesh – in the
law – in any of our actions.
The Epistle to the Philippians
Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ
• 3:4-6 – Paul’s confidence in the flesh
• 3:4 Though I also might have confidence in the
flesh.
• Surprising point – One does not expect Paul to
argue this point. It is important for his point in
vss 7-11.
• If anyone thinks he may have confidence in
the flesh,
• I more so “I may have more confidence in the
flesh.”
The Epistle to the Philippians
Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ
• 3:7-11 – Paul’s choice of confidence in Christ.
• 3:7 – But these I have counted loss for Christ
• But – Paul rejects confidence in the flesh
• These - what things were gain to me
• I have counted loss – considered useless.
• For Christ – for the sake of Christ’s
righteousness.
The Epistle to the Philippians
Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ
• 3:7-11 – Paul’s choice of confidence in Christ
• 3:8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important.
• Yet indeed I count all things loss
• For the excellency of the knowledge of Christ
Jesus, my Lord – “for the goal of knowing”
• For whom I have suffered the loss of all
things “I suffered because of Jesus”
• And [I] count them as rubbish
• That I may gain Christ “in order that”
• And [that I may] be found in Him
The Epistle to the Philippians
Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ
• 3:8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important.
• Yet indeed I count all things loss
• For the knowledge of Christ
• And [that I may] be found in Him
• Not having my own righteousness “not be found
in Him by means of having my own”
• Which is from the law
• But [by means of having] that [righteousness]
• which is through faith in Christ
• The righteousness which is from God by faith
The Epistle to the Philippians
Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ
• 3:8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important.
• Yet indeed I count all things loss
• For the knowledge of Christ
• That I may know Him “in order to know Him”
• And the power of His resurrection
• And the fellowship of His sufferings
• Being conformed to His death “by means of
being conformed”
• If by any means I may attain to the
resurrection of the dead.
