KongsbergUnderwaterTechnology,Inc.hascompletednegotiationswith
CoMotion,theUniversityofWashington’scollaborativeinnovationhub,toobtain
thesolerightstoproduce,marketandcontinuedevelopmentoftwonew
underwaterglidersystems.Bothnewglidersystemsarebasedinpartonthe
original,provenSeagliderdesign.Thefirstvehicle,Deepglider,isdesignedfor
operationtoamaximumdepthof6,000metres.Thiscapabilitywillallowthe
systemtocompletelyprofileover97%oftheworld’soceans.
Thesecondvehicle,Oculus,isspecificallydesignedforhighperformance,shallow
wateroperation.Oculushas3,500cm3ofvariablebuoyancy––whichwillallowit
tooperatefromfreshwatertoseawaterwithouttheneedtoalteritsstaticballast.Itisalsocapableofachievinghorizontal
speedsupto2knots.Thesecapabilitieswillenableoperationsinareasofextremedensityvariationandhighcurrents.
OceanGliderPrinciple
Oceanglidersareaspecialisedtypeofautonomousunderwatervehicle(AUV).Ratherthanusingapropellertomovethrough
thewater,theyusefixedwingsandchangesinbuoyancytoachievebothverticalandforwardmotion.Thevehiclesmove
throughthewaterinasaw-toothtrajectoryandsurfaceperiodicallytocommunicatedataonwaterproperties,suchas
temperature,salinityandoxygenconcentration,backtousersviasatellitetelemetry.Thisformofpropulsionisveryenergy
efficientandallowsmissionperiodsofseveralmonthsanddistancesofthousandsofkilometres,ratherthanjustafewdays
andtensofkilometrestypicalofpropeller-drivenAUVs.
DevelopmentoftheseglidersystemswassupportedbyfederalgrantsfromtheNationalScienceFoundation,National
OceanicandAtmosphericAdministration,andtheDepartmentofNavy,OfficeofNavalResearch.
TherangeofKongsbergSeaglidermodelsaredisplayedalongsidetheEelumeunderwaterrobotforthefirsttimeatAUVSI
Xponential,whichtakesplacefrom8-11May2017attheKayBailerHutchisonConventionCenterinDallas(booth#1846).
