Extraneous Information About
the Atom
The smallest atom, hydrogen, has two isotopes. They are deuterium
(one proton, one neutron) and tritium (one proton, two neutrons).
As of October, 2014, there are 118 elements on the Periodic Table.
There are 92 naturally occurring elements on the Periodic Table.
There are 79 stable elements on the Periodic Table.
There are 39 radioactive elements on the Periodic Table.
1.)
Fission is the process whereby a large atom is split into two smaller
atoms. If the element has an atomic number greater than iron’s,
energy will be given off in the process. This is the basis of the atom
bomb.
Fusion is the process whereby two small atoms is forced together into
one larger atoms. If the elements have atomic number less than
iron’s, energy will be given off in the process. This is the basis of the
hydrogen bomb and is the power source for stars.
