Math 1309 Calculus for Business Students

Calculus and its Applications, 10th ed., Marvin Bittinger,
Addison Wesley, 2000
Content: This course includes the fundamentals of differential and integral calculus,
multivariates and Lagrange Multipliers. Math models will be used for problems in economics,
finance and other areas of business. Techniques for finding optimal solutions will be studied.
Tests: There will be 4 major tests and a comprehensive final exam (which will count the same as
a major test). Short quizzes will be given, and homework will be checked occasionally. The
course grade will be 15% daily average, 15% each of the four tests, and 25% final exam.
Major tests (tentative): Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 12, Dec. 3
Final Exam: Tues., Dec. 13 at 11:30p.m.
Your course grade will be assigned based on the following scale:
A=100-90 B+=89-87 B=86-80 C+=79-77 C=76-70 D=69-60 F=59-0
Make-up Tests: A student who makes arrangements with me before a missed test will be given a
similar make up test. A student who contacts me after the missed test will be given a more
difficult make up test. Make-ups on short quizes will not be given, but two of the total number
given will be dropped.
Attendance policy: The College of Arts and Sciences attendance policy states that a student
must be present 75% of all class meetings in order to receive credit for the course. Roll will
be checked every day. For this MWF class no more than 10 absences are allowed
General Information:
A graphing calculator is required. The TI-83 Plus is recommended.
Grades will be posted on Blackboard.
Course documents can be found using Blackboard.
Help Outside Class: During my designated office hours I will be available to answer student
questions. The math department secretary has a list of private tutors who charge from $12 to
$25 per hour. Free help sessions are available at the Paul Foster Success Center and in Sid
Richardson Room 326 at times to be announced.
