Process Guiding Questions:
The current Schoolnet (i.e., Pearson) contract term is set to expire on
June 30, 2018. This does not mean the Pearson product is reaching
it’s end of life, rather the DPI contract is simply up for renewal. The
following questions guide the strategic decision making process
anytime an agency contract is up for renewal:
● How are the current services being utilized and what is the perceived quality of
the services by the end user?
● What does the analysis of current usage data reveal? [The most recent
analysis shows that Schoolnet is primarily leveraged as an assessment
platform]
● What services could be folded in with other service providers at a cost savings?
● Does research need to be done to determine if the service landscape has
changed since the initial contract was executed?
● What would a 6-9 month transition look like if the agency was to transition to a
new product? What would be the contingency timeline?
● How does the agency mitigate risk (if there were to be a transition to a new
system) with a possible plan B or C in the interim?
● What is the potential impact of the current Open Educational Resources (OER)
RFP that NC DPI is planning to release?
Next Steps:
● Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Leaders and Accountability Leaders in Local
Education Agencies and Charter Schools will receive a survey regarding
Schoolnet use. [This will happen during the month of April]
● The Home Base Advisory Group will review the survey data during their May
2017 meeting.
● Between now and May, we hope to ensure that Schoolnet and various Learning
Management Systems (LMS) (especially Canvas) integrate for greater
effectiveness; This will ensure that instructional materials can be pulled into a
student facing LMS.
