Name:
Learning Area or Integrated Investigation
Year Level:
Mathematics and Design and Technology
Background Information: Generic Class Statement
This term a focus area of the class has been to work in a small group on the design, making and sale of a product to
members of their school community. The class identified the issues and process that they would need to undertake to
design, make and then sell their product.
Task/Starting Point/Big Idea: Generic Class Statement
As the Adelaide Royal Show was to take place in this term the class decided to make the product for sale a Show Bag. It
was decided that each group would have a budget of $10.00 and any profit made would go toward the class end of year
excursion. Each group decided on a target market and then through informed decisions proposed what a show bag could
contain, its design and its cost to produce. They then constructed the bag/s, advertised and sold their product.
Assessing Criteria: Individual Statement
The student negotiated criteria for assessment included:


Collaborative group work
Fulfilment of design
requirements




Data collection and analysis
At least 2 methods of
advertising
Evidence of staying within budget
A report on the success of their business
This criteria involved self, peer and teacher assessment.
Process: Generic Class Statement
Using collaborative group work decisions on the role of group members and the anticipated target market were made.
Groups then designed a survey to gather data about the content and design of their show bag. This data was collected
and analysed and information regarding all costs was gathered. The group then constructed their bag/s and their content,
advertised the bag/s and then on market day offered the bag/s for sale. A report was then presented on the success of
their business venture and recommendations for improved practice.
Evaluation based on Criteria (Self, Peer and/or Teacher): Individual Statement
In the evidence collected, xxxxxxxxx has demonstrated the following: Individual Statement





The design of an appropriate survey for their target audience.
The successful collection of data from their survey.
The analysis of this data to plan the design of a showbag.
The construction of a showbag/s based on the analysis of data.
A financial plan and record was kept.




The successful advertisement and sale of the bag.
Worked collaboratively in a team.
Successful fulfilment of several roles in the team.
Presented an oral report as a team member.
This has allowed for the demonstration of the outcomes below: Individual Statement
Design and Technology: Describes why several factors such as size, shape, material, colour etc are important for a
person buying a show bag. (2.1)
Uses card, paper and fabrics to make their showbag and aspects of it’s content. Assessed
materials used and techniques as they discovered which suits their needs and fulfils the
requirements of the design.(2.4)
Mathematics:
Makes decisions about which data to collect and plans how to collect and record it to answer
their question/s. (2.1)
Makes predictions and generalisations for a larger population. (2.2)
Uses a calculator to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and with money
represented as decimals. (2.8)
Parent/ Carer Feedback
Note: The Outcomes are described within the context in which they were demonstrated.
