JOB DESCRIPTION
Post:
Leader of Computing and Computer Science
Responsible to:
Vice Principal/Assistant Principal
Job Purpose:




To lead, develop and enhance the teaching of GCSE and A Level Computing and GCSE and A
Level Computer Science and develop the skills of other staff as required
To raise standards of student attainment and achievement within the whole curriculum area and
to monitor and support student progress
To be accountable for leading, managing and developing teaching and learning projects within
the subject/curriculum area
To provide practical support to teachers to improve their teaching and learning skills. Typical
activities will normally include, coaching, mentoring and induction of teachers, including from
trainees and NQT's to experienced classroom teachers.
Responsible for:

Teaching staff and other relevant personnel teaching Computing and Computer Science
Liaison with:

Senior Leadership Team, Curriculum Leader, Guidance Leaders, Leader of Learning Support and
other leading teachers, relevant non-teaching staff, LA staff, parents and the community
MAIN (CORE) DUTIES
Operational/Strategic planning



The development of appropriate resources, schemes of work, marking policies, assessment and
teaching and learning strategies in order to deliver GCSE and A Level Computing and GCSE and
A Level Computer Science
To monitor actively and follow up student progress
To implement school policies and procedures, e.g. Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety etc.
Curriculum provision


To support the Department to ensure the delivery of an appropriate, comprehensive, high
quality and cost-effective curriculum programme which complements the School Improvement
Plan
To develop extra-curricular provision within the Department
Curriculum development






To lead curriculum developments in Computing and Computer Science
To initiate and develop new strategies/projects to raise achievement
To produce high quality teaching materials in the curriculum area
To lead professional development activities in the Department
To keep up-to-date with national developments in the subject area and teaching practice and
methodology
To monitor actively and respond to curriculum development and initiatives at national, regional
and local levels
Staffing
Staff development





To ensure that staff development needs are identified and that appropriate programmes are
designed to meet such needs
To disseminate to colleagues best practice
To support teachers who are experiencing difficulties
To work with teachers to match teaching approaches to student learning styles
To undertake Performance Management Reviews and to act as reviewer for a group of staff
within the designed department and make pay recommendations.
Quality assurance







To ensure the effective operation of quality control systems
To support the process of the setting of targets within the Department and to work towards their
achievement
To establish common standards of practice within the Department and develop the effectiveness
of teaching and learning styles within the Department
To contribute to the Academy procedures for lesson observation
To implement the Academy quality procedures and to ensure adherence to those within the
Department
To monitor and evaluate the curriculum area in line with agreed Academy procedures, including
evaluation against quality standards and performance criteria and contributing to a regular (at
least annually) departmental review
To seek/implement modification and improvement where required
Management information




To ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date student information on ISAMS.
To make use of analysis and evaluate performance data provided
To identify students not making progress and take appropriate action to provide support through
effective intervention
To provide the Governing Body with relevant information on Teaching and Learning projects
initiated
Communications


To ensure effective communication/consultation, as appropriate, with the parents of students
To liaise with partner schools, further education, industry, examination boards, Governors and
other relevant external bodies
Marketing and liaison


To contribute to the Academy liaison and marketing activities, e.g. the collection of material for
press releases
To support the development of effective subject links with partner schools and the community,
attendance where necessary at liaison events in partner schools and the effective promotion of
subjects at Open Days/Evenings and other events

To promote actively the development of effective subject links with external agencies
Management of resources

To develop and enhance the learning environment, including the range and quality of
departmental displays and the best use of departmental areas
Pastoral system





To monitor and support the overall progress and development of students within the Department
To monitor, alongside the Curriculum and Pastoral Leaders the student attendance together with
students’ progress and performance in relation to targets set for each individual and
performance in relation to targets set for each individual, ensuring that follow-up procedures are
adhered to and that appropriate action is taken where necessary
To act as a form tutor and to carry out the duties associated with that role as outlined in the
generic job description
To contribute to PSHE, Citizenship and Enterprise according to Academy policy
To support the Vice Principal ( Curriculum ) in ensuring the Learning Environment guidance is
implemented in the Department so that effective learning can take place
Teaching

To undertake an appropriate programme of teaching in accordance with the duties of a standard
scale teacher
Other specific duties

To engage actively in the Performance Review process
To undertake any other duty as specified by STPCB not mentioned in the above
