New Year celebration in Sri Lanka
It is public holiday in Sri Lanka. It is generally
celebrated on 13 April or 14 April. According to the
Sinhalese astrology, New Year beings when sun moves
from Meena Rashiya (the house of Pisces )to the
Meena Rashiya (the house of the Aries) and it is a major
anniversary celebrated by not only the Sinhalese people
but by most of the Sri Lankans. The main New Year’s
day being with the lighting of hearth. The families
members wear new cloths and exchange gifts and a
famous game usually cricket or baseball is played with
the excitement by the childern.
How do they celebrate
They have a social games to play and the enjoy
themselves.
The custom of offering betel to parents and elder
symbolizes the act paying gratitude and the children
receive blessing from parents.

Traditional Food
 The traditional food that most often people in Sri
Lanka eats.
Traditional Dress
 The women in Sri Lanka Wear the jackets and men
wears sarong.
Traditional Games
 The Sri Lankan Sinhalese and Tamil New year (Aluth
Avurudhu in Sinhala and Puththandu in Tamil) is a
national fetival celebrated for centuries.
 New year games are categorised in indoor and outdoor.
Some indoor games are Bello and Ksju and the outdoor
games are Havari Hengima, Chaggudu and Kotta Pora.
National Bird
 Junglefowl is the official national bird. The colorful
bird is endemic to Sri Lanka and commonly found in
national parks.
