Page 2 Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA) The Global Fellowship Program Part B: Project Preference Fellows will be expected to work on one Primary Project, and up to two Secondary Projects. Even though Fellows may become involved in other activities at BORDA or its partner organizations across India including CDD Society, the Primary and Secondary projects ensure focus and a tangible output by the end of the Fellowship period. Fellows will receive support from BORDA’s global team as well as its partner organizations, for technical support, access and data. Each Project will be part of, or will build upon live work underway at BORDA or its partner organizations across India, giving Fellows an opportunity to do work that is presently relevant, and will include field work. Fellows will take technical and managerial leadership on selected Projects, taking independent responsibility for achieving outcomes that are determined along with the Project Supervisors. Please select up to 3 Primary Projects (indicating preferences 1, 2 and 3) that you would be interested in, and write a brief note (200 words or less) explaining why you are interested in the particular project, mentioning any background or qualifications that will enable you to work effectively on it. Secondary Projects shall be determined later, jointly by the Fellow and the BORDA team. Project 1: Improving Design of De-centralized Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS) De-centralized treatment systems are relatively small scale plants (1,000 – 2 Million Liters per Day) that treat wastewater on-site or close to the location of generation—ideal for large apartment or commercial buildings and campuses. DEWATS use biological processes without electricity, to treat sewage so it is safe for release into the environment. Due to growing water shortages in Indian cities, we are developing new tertiary treatment processes so the treated water can be re-used for various applications including gardening / landscaping, flushing and road washing. Further, larger systems is growing (over 750KLPD), and we need to find new ways to reduce the area required by our DEWATS. Project 2: Designing and Productionizing Pre-Fabricated DEWATS DEWATS are traditionally constructed as part of the civil structure of the building, using bricks and cement. We have developed pre-fabricated containers made of FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Polymer) which can be installed quickly without risk of poor or off-spec construction, thus improving the performance of small systems (1,000-20,000 Liters per Day). These products can be designed for more efficient production processes like Roto-molding, and can also be designed for easier storage and transportation (e.g. stackable), flexibility in configuration, etc. Page 3 Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA) The Global Fellowship Program Sensors can also be integrated to improve performance. A background in mechanical product design and manufacturing processes will be useful. Project 3: Sewage Testing Systems Treated sewage must meet various statutory requirements before being deemed safe for release or reuse. Parameters including BOD, COD, TSS, Pathogen levels, pH, TKN, free Chlorine, heavy metals etc. need to be checked regularly to ensure systems are working effectively. Commonly used testing systems require tedious and error-prone sample collection and transportation processes, expensive and time consuming detection process. This makes it difficult to accurately monitor the performance of wastewater treatment systems in real-time. We believe that modern sensors, bio-chemical testing processes and data analytics, can help develop lower cost monitoring systems that give real-time feedback so that treatment plants can be operated more effectively. Project 4: City-scale Sanitation Services through Public-Private Partnerships BORDA and its partner CDD Society are developing PPPs with local governments to provide turnkey sanitation solutions to the 7,000 towns and cities in India. Fellows will assess PPP opportunities across India, build financial models, collect data and prepare bid documents for these contracts. Fellows will also help develop the service delivery model including building teams and developing operating processes and performance monitoring systems, and support in executing contracts and delivering services. Project 5: Cleaning and rejuvenating large storm-water and sewage drains in Indian cities Most Indian cities have large, open drains to carry storm water to open water bodies such as rivers, lakes and the sea. However, as these drains wind through the city, sewage pipes and toilets directly pump raw sewage into these drains, contaminating the end receiving water body. The opportunity is to design practical, feasible and reasonable cost solutions to treat the water in these storm-water drains, and also use the opportunity to create green spaces for citizens. A live project will be to clean up the Palam drain in New Delhi. Project 6: A Systems Approach to Urban Sanitation in India Sanitation involved a complex interplay between health outcomes, citizen engagement, infrastructure development, public finance, operations and maintenance and environmental factors. A system dynamics approach can develop a more robust understanding on how to effectively and efficiently achieve overall city-level sanitation outcomes. This project can begin engaging stakeholders and building models to clarify thinking and causality. I understand that the BORDA Global Fellowship attempts to bring high quality professional and entrepreneurial skills from across the world to the sanitation sector in India, to address urgent and complex challenges. It is not an academic project simply to provide exposure to Fellows. If accepted and subject to receiving required visas and permits, I agree to attend the BORDA Global Fellowship Program with full professional focus and enthusiasm, aiming to deliver useful and important outcomes and results. Lastly, I declare that all the information in this application form is true and accurate. Signed by: Name: Date: Location: Page 6
