Division Vocabulary and Notes
divide (division)- an operation on two numbers in which the first number is split into the
same number of equal groups as the second number.
fact family - a group of related facts using the same number
variable – a letter or symbol used to represent an unknown quantity.
divisor - the number that is doing the dividing
dividend - the number that is being divided
quotient - the results of a division problem
remainder - the number that is left after one whole number is divided by another
divisible - describes a number that can be divided into equal parts and has no
remainder.
Divisibility Rules
~Any whole number ends in a 0, 2, 4, 6, or an 8, then the number is divisible by 2
~If the sum of the digits in the number is divisible by 3, then that number is also divisible by 3
~Any whole number that ends in a 0 or a 5 it is divisible by 5
~If a number is divisible by 2 and 3 then it is also divisible by 6
~If the sum of the digits in the number is divisible by 9, then that number is also divisible by 9
~Any whole number that ends in a 0 is divisible by 10.
