Network Registration – Summer 2014
College Houses
What is network registration and why is it required?
All computing devices connecting to the University of Chicago network within the residence halls must complete the
network registration process before getting full internet access. Registration is an important part of network security,
and can additionally help you retrieve your computer if it is lost or stolen. Computing devices connected to the
University of Chicago network must be running a valid, licensed operating system supported by the University of
Chicago. In addition, you must have all current security patches and updates for your operating system, and use the
FREE Symantec Endpoint Protection antivirus software provided by the University of Chicago. Registration of student
computers requires acceptance of the University of Chicago Information Technology Usage Policies and the Terms of
Use for Central Services. For more information about the University of Chicago network security, please see
Protecting your Passwords and Data Security.
How to pre-register your computing devices from home
1. Ensure your computer is running an authentic and licensed operating system. The University of Chicago
supports the recommended operating systems - Windows 7, Windows 8, Mac OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) &
10.9 (Mavericks), Apple iOS 6.1 & 7.1, Andriod iOS 4.3 (JellyBean) & iOS 4.4 (KitKat) and Linux.
2. Verify that your operating system is up-to-date. Install all current security updates from the vendor.
3. Install the FREE UChicago Symantec Endpoint Protection antivirus software. To prevent performance issues
and crashes, completely uninstall any other antivirus software before attempting to install the UChicago
antivirus software. Some common examples of antivirus software that should be removed are:
Norton/Symantec, McAfee, AVG, and Kaspersky.
4. Check for antivirus updates. After the UChicago antivirus software is installed, you will need to make sure
that the definitions are updated. Be sure to check for updates often.
5. Turn ON the Windows Firewall. Instructions can be found here.
6. Register your computing device(s). To register personal computing devices with a hard wired network card
(PC, game console, TV) please proceed to the DHCP Network Registration website. To register wireless
devices (mobile phone, tablet or laptop) please proceed to the Wireless Network Registration website.
After arriving on campus
The following steps cannot be completed until you arrive on campus and preregister. After completing all the
previous steps, registration will only take a few minutes after settling into your residence hall room.
Ensure that your wired computing device is connected to the Ethernet connection in your room. If multiple
devices are being connected you will need to have an Ethernet switch added between the Ethernet jack and
your personal network devices. The wired connection provides the fastest and safest connection to the
Internet. Prepare to bring a 5-port Ethernet switch, a primary 25’ Ethernet cable and shorter Ethernet patch
cables to connect multiple devices prior to your arrival.
Ensure that your wireless computing device is connected to the "UChicago-Secure" wireless network.
Information on how to connect to the “UChicago-Secure” wireless network can be found here. Please review
this information prior to your arrival.
1. Once on campus open a web browser and load any webpage. This will redirect you to a login page for The
University of Chicago network. Enter your CNET ID and password in the fields provided and click Submit.
2. Acceptable Use Policy. In order to use the UChicago Wireless network, you must understand and agree to
the UChicago Acceptable Use Policy. Once you have a complete understanding of the policy, select the
checkbox and click Start.
3. ActiveX and Java Installation. If you are using Internet Explorer, the CloudPath provisioning software will
attempt to execute an ActiveX add-on. If you are running Firefox or Chrome Java will need to be installed. To
continue, you will need to install the necessary add-on and allow XpressConnect to run.
4. Follow the instructions to install XpressConnect. You will be prompted to download and install SafeConnect
on your computer. After successfully logging in with your CNET ID and password the installation will begin.
Once XpressConnect is installed you will be fully registered to the UChicago network.
Successful completion of the registration process helps ensure a safe and secure connection to the internet while at
the University of Chicago. More information about the University of Chicago network usage policy is available at
Information Technology Usage Policies and the Terms of Use for Central Services.
After the XpressConnect installation has completed a web browser window will open displaying the webpage you
entered. If at any time you have questions during the registration process, please call the ResCom Help Desk at
773-702-2311 for assistance.
