Students will answer questions about Virginian Indians in a game format. SOLs: VS.2 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the physical geography and native peoples, past and present, of Virginia by d) locating three American Indian language groups (the Algonquian, the Siouan, and the Iroquoian) on a map of Virginia; e) describing how American Indians related to the climate and their environment to secure food, clothing, and shelter; f) describing how archaeologists have recovered new material evidence at sites including Werowocomoco and Jamestown; g) identifying and locating the current state-recognized tribes. Materials: - Jeopardy review game - 5 teams of 4 - Notebook paper for final jeopardy - Jolly Ranchers for the winners Procedure: 1. Move students around to ensure all teams are equal. Label the teams Team 1, Team 2, Team 3, Team 4, and Team 5. 2. Introduce Jeopardy game as a review of the Eastern Woodland Indians. Explain that students need to have a spokesperson who will be the only person to raise their hand. Students will be raising their hands rather than pushing a buzzer and need to have the answer before they raise their hand. 3. Pull up the game of Jeopardy and introduce the categories. Pick the team that gets to choose first through a lottery (team numbers in a hat or bowl). Have that team pick the first category and monetary amount. 4. Play Jeopardy as it is normally played. 5. On Final Jeopardy, tell students that after you show the question, they will have one minute to figure out an answer as a group. They can bet all or part of their money on the final question. 6. Explain that this is all information that could be on Test 1. If they felt confident during this game and were getting a lot of the answers, they have a good start on the information on the first test. Assessment: Formative: Student collaboration on answers Summative: Student answers during game, student performance on Test 1, student performance on questions relating to First Americans on SOL test
