THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS MISSION
Our Mission is to provide year-round
sports training and athletic competition
in a variety of Olympic-type sports for
children and adults with intellectual
disabilities by giving them continuing
opportunities to develop physical fitness,
demonstrate courage, experience joy and
participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and
friendship with their families, other
Special Olympics athletes and the
community.
The Special Olympics Oath is... "Let me
win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in
the attempt."
Our Philosophy ... Special Olympics is
founded on the belief that people with
intellectual disabilities can, with proper
instruction and encouragement, learn,
enjoy and benefit from participation in
individual and team sports, adapted as
necessary to meet the needs of those
with special mental and physical
limitations.
Special Olympics believes that
consistent training, with emphasis on
physical conditioning, is essential to the
development of sports skills, and that
competition among those of equal
abilities is the most appropriate means of
testing these skills, measuring progress
and providing incentives for personal
growth.
Special Olympics believes that through
sports training and competition, people
with intellectual disabilities benefit
physically, mentally, socially and
spiritually; families are strengthened; and
the community at large, both through
participation and observation, is united
with people with intellectual disabilities
in an environment of equality, respect
and acceptance.

VOLUNTEER
The Life you change may be your own
Special Olympics would not exist today
without the time, energy, commitment
and enthusiasm of people just like
you. Volunteers are an important part of
a global movement that provides athletes
with intellectual disabilities the
excitement, joy and personal fulfillment
associated with sport training and
competition.
Volunteers are the backbone of Special
Olympics, and we need you! Special
Olympics Kentucky is looking for anyone
wanting to help make a difference in the
lives of our athletes, whether you're a
corporation looking for an employee
team-building exercise, a social or
religious group looking to have a greater
involvement in your community, or a
family or individual who wants to make a
difference in the world. Volunteering for
Special Olympics Kentucky can create a
lifetime of friendships and rewards of
immeasurable value, both for you and the
athletes inspired by your time and
dedication.

SUPPORT
PARTICIPATE
Just having the opportunity to compete and demonstrate their talents is a victory in its own
right. And while athletes aren’t promised a medal every time out, we use an extensive
process to ensure that athletes of like abilities are competing against one another, so
everyone has the chance to claim gold with their best effort.
Whether they win or not, athletes benefit greatly while developing physical abilities, making
friends, building self-esteem and receiving praise and encouragement from their families and
the community. It’s not just the athletes who win when they join Special Olympics but it’s the
people who support them every step of the way who end up winning too.
With 15 active sports offered, there is something for every athlete
children through adulthood to participate in.

WILL
CHANGE
YOU
INSIDE
AND
OUT
For more than 35 years, Special Olympics
Kentucky has been changing the lives of
people with intellectual disabilities in the
state through the simple tool of sports.
Beyond volunteering, there are countless
ways you can support Special Olympics
Kentucky athletes. We receive no
government funding, so the organization
relies on contributions from corporations,
sponsors, and people like you in order to
continue providing these great services for
our athletes.
Whether you make a tax-deductible
contribution to support our mission or
participate in one of the many fun, unique
fund-raising events, like dinners or
auctions , pulling a jet plane, or jumping
into chilly waters as part of the Polar Bear
Plunge, it’s easy for you to make a
difference for these athletes.
Through is statewide, year-round program
of sports training and competition, Special
Olympics Kentucky provides people with
intellectual disabilities of all skill levels the
opportunities to achieve their very best
and to experience and share the joy of
their accomplishments.
Special Olympics contributes to the
physical, social and psychological
development of the athletes. Athletes
gain confidence and build a positive
self-image, plus they learn the value of
teamwork, working with a coach, and
striving for their personal best. These
lessons all carry over from the field into
the athlete’s classroom, home, job, and
community.
Today more than 6,500 athletes participate
in Special Olympics Kentucky and over 2
million athletes participate in more than
170 countries worldwide. Special Olympics
Kentucky has programs in nearly every
county, making the program accessible to
everyone who wishes to compete.
