Cancer cervix in Indian scenario; how to fight
against it and save women’s lives.
Cancer of cervix is a disease characterized by an
abnormal change of cells of epithelium of cervix uteri and
have ability to invade adjacent tissues and even distant
organs with a high mortality if not identified and
treated early. In India this is the commonest cancer
among females and the incidence rate is on an average
25 per 1,00,000 population.
This disease is caused by Human Papilloma Virus
which is sexually transmitted and takes 15-20 years or
even longer to invade the distant organs of the body. It
commonly affects 25-45 year women, more likely to be in
widowed, divorced or separated and having multiple sexual
partners. Early marriage, early child-bearing and
repeated child births, prolonged use of oral contraceptive
pills, poor genital hygiene increases the risk. The crux of
the problem is that majority of suffered women present
themselves in far advanced stage when no treatment is
amenable.
Primarily it can be prevented by improving personal
hygiene and birth control which have been experienced in
developed countries. Secondly early diagnosis by screening
test and immediate treatment can be undertaken to increase
the life expectancy of the affected women.
A save women programme may be initiated in
feminine population about scenario of the disease to help
them to understand how important is this for regular
medical examination and early detection of cancer and
pre-cancerous lesions carried through schools, colleges and
public places. Training of medical personals, involvement of
cancer institutes, setting of centers for detection in rural
and urban areas, immediate treatment of patients are major
interventions for fighting against this disease.
Cancer of cervix is the most common cancer among
women has predominantly environment related and strong
socio-cultural relationship. Improving personal hygiene,
birth control and early detection with prompt treatment will
be beneficial for saving the suffered women’s lives.
