Civil War Project Read all directions before beginning this project! Complete the project according to the directions. You have almost three weeks to work on this project, pace yourself doing some each day if possible. The project will be due on Monday, May 2nd and will not be accepted after Friday, May 6th even for partial credit. Each day late after May 2nd will be 20% off. Please plan accordingly if you are going to be out of school that week for any reason. You will be creating a Civil War Monopoly Board. You may work alone or with one partner in your same class period only. No exceptions; choose wisely-you and your partner will make the same grade. If you have never played Monopoly I will go over the general idea in class. 1. The Monopoly Board will have 36-40 squares-on each square will be the name of a Battle, General, or significant location; each designated as either Union or Confederate - victory or person, and so forth. Put under the title the date of the Battle or the birth and death date of the person. If it is a place put what is significant about it. Also, there may be four railroads and the utility and income tax squares if you wish. The Board should be made of a square, not rectangular, cut piece of poster board, piece of plywood, cardboard or something similar. Please make the Board as near a real Monopoly Board as possible, these may also be seen on the Internet if your family or friend does not have one. You do not need to make deeds to the properties. There should be 10 community chest and 10 chance cards that should be named something related to the Civil War, such as Blue and Gray, etc. These cards should be labeled on the top of each one. On the back side of each card there should be a topic or event related to the war, i.e. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, go back 3 spaces, or Regiment ran out of hardtack (food) pay $1.00 and so forth. 2. There should be one piece of currency for each of the following denominations: one, five, ten, twenty, onehundred, and five-hundred for a total of 6. Use the Internet to see samples of Union and/or Confederate currency. 3. There should be 5 small moving pieces that would have existed during the Civil War time period, such as a horse, button, boot, or rope, etc. Do not use pieces from a real Monopoly game or anything fragile, expensive, or sentimental to your family as you may lose it. 4. There should be a one or two drawings/pictures of a battle, person, flag, document, etc. (your choice) in the middle of the Board to make it attractive. Be creative, neat, and colorful. You may glue or hand draw pictures on the Board in order to make it more attractive. Represent both sides of the conflict/war, not just your favorite. The project will be worth 200 points. If you have any questions, ask early. Do not wait until the day before the project is due to get clarification. Board points: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Each square 2 points (1 for title, one for explanation/picture) Cards 10 Community Chest and 10 Chance 1.5pt. each Money (6) Moving pieces Middle of Board (featured drawing/picture) Neatness/creativity/effort Total =80 (corners count twice) =30 =10 =10 =20 =50 =200 possible points
