Student Classroom Policy
2011 - 2012
The Adult Basic Education program strives for a safe, productive, learning environment. In order to maintain this goal, students are
expected to abide by the following standards:
1.
Come to class on time. Roll will be taken 5 minutes after class begins, if a student does not comply with the 5 minute rule, the
student will be counted absent for the class period.
2.
Class participation is required. Students are expected to participate in classroom activities including homework, discussion, and
any in class assignments. Students can be removed from a class at the teacher’s discretion for non-compliance.
3.
There is a 10 break between each class. This should be sufficient time to use the restroom, make phone calls, get a snack, etc.,
and students are to remain in class during the allotted class time.
4.
Students need to demonstrate a desire to learn by displaying behavior appropriate to learning. Students will be removed from
class and possibly the program for the following:
Insensitivity or disrespect towards students/staff/instructors
Use of offensive language
Harassment or any behavior perceived as offensive
Disruptively loud behavior
Possession of any weapon, including knives or using threatening behavior towards students/staff/instructors
Disregard of personal hygiene
Being under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol
Being in “No Student Zone” areas on campus
Vandalizing property
Using cell phones in the classroom (Phones need to be turned off and put away)
Listening to music in the classroom (MP3 players need to be turned off and put away)
5.
Students are encouraged to use the computer lab for self directed learning using a variety of programs. Students must sign in
before using the computer and sign out when they are finished. If a student is caught using the computer for personal use while
they are signed in, those hours will not be counted towards their computer time.
6. Priority for computer use is given to students who are working on educational software. If computers are available, students
may use the computer for personal use for 30 minute increments. Students should not sign in if they are using computers for
personal use.
I understand the Student Contract as stated above. I understand that if I do not follow the contract, I may not be able to complete the
program and could be terminated from the program. San Juan College Adult Basic Education program reserves the right to make exceptions to
the above stated policies on a case-by-case basis.
