Serves as a WHO advisor, participated in multiple consultancies and
training activities: in Burkina Faso (meningitis epidemic 1996), Republic
of Congo (multi-country workshop for bacterial meningitis, 1996),
Bahrain (evaluation of Hib disease burden 1998), Yemen (training for
preparedness, 1999), Syria (evaluation of disease burden before and after
introduction of Hib vaccines, 2000), Tunisia (assessment of bacterial
meningitis surveillance, 2002)]; Currently serves as a member of the
EMRO regional Technical advisory group for immunizations.
1998-2005
PI on multiple studies re: epidemiology of fungal infections, and
opportunistic infections in persons with AIDS (Thailand, Vietnam, and
South Africa where she initiated population-based cryptococcal disease
surveillance that later grew into a national surveillance system (GERMS).
2003-2005
as Head of Disease Surveillance Program at NAMRU-3, Egypt, was
involved in multiple projects and outbreak investigations in the region,
and helped establish regional network for bacterial meningitis surveillance
2005- 2009
As part of the Hib Initiative, was responsible to accelerate decisions for
Hib vaccine uptake in 72 developing countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, the
Pacific Islands, and the Middle East. Project resulted in vaccine
introduction in all GAVI countries, instead of 80% initially set target.
2009- Ongoing
Member, AVI management team, of the GAVI funded “Accelerated
Vaccine Initiative”
