Health services research affects a wide range of medication-use topics, including patient education;
patient outcomes and effectiveness of medication therapy; health care quality; medication use in minority,
elderly and other special populations; medication costs and financing; information for health care
policymakers; and access to medications. A secondary goal of the Pharmacy Resident Health Services
Grant Program is to develop pharmacy residents’ research skills while fostering development of
mentoring relationships with more experienced senior investigators.
"The joint efforts of pharmacy residents and their mentors was clearly evident in the quality and variety of
research projects proposed this year,” says Milap C. Nahata, Pharm.D., M.S., FASHP, Professor and
Division Chair at Ohio State University’s College of Pharmacy, Professor of Pediatrics and Internal
Medicine at OSU’s College of Medicine and Public Health, and Associate Director for Education at the
OSU Medical Center Department of Pharmacy. Nahata served as the ASHP Foundation Research
Advisory Panel liaison to the grant program’s selection panel. “This is a tremendous opportunity for the
residents to learn research skills. The ASHP Research and Education Foundation should be commended
for supporting this grant program."
The ASHP Research and Education Foundation was established in 1968 by the American Society of Health-System
Pharmacists as a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. The mission of the Foundation is to improve the health and well-being of
patients in hospitals and health systems through appropriate, safe and effective medication use. The Foundation provides
leadership and conducts education and research activities that foster the coordination of interdisciplinary medication
management leading to optimal patient outcomes. Emphasis is given to programs that will have a major impact on advancing
pharmacy practice in hospitals and health systems, thereby improving public health.
