Comparing Cell Types
Prokaryotic Cells
Eukaryotic Cells
How are
they alike?
Regardless of cell type or cell size, all cells have:
A cell membrane, cytoplasm, DNA, ribosomes, control region
How are they
different?
stay small and simple because:
They do not have a nucleus
or membrane-bound organelles.
Other differences:
- single circular
chromosome
- nucleoid region
- appeared 3.5 bya
- bacteria only
are larger and more complex
because:
They have a nucleus and membranebound organelles. These parts can
perform specific functions increasing
efficiency of a larger cell.
Other differences:
- multiple linear chromosomes
- appeared 1.5 bya
- protists, fungi, plants, and
animals
