WHEN an individual creates a home, he or she is creating a micro universe that entails all
aspects, influences and elements of the universe. The rules that apply to the entire universe
also apply to one's place of dwelling in Vasthu.
It is important how a property owner observes these rules as they connect the dweller to the
five elements (ether, air, fire, water and earth). The planetary influences determine an
individual's quality of life within his mini universe.
Vasthu is all about dwelling in tune with the elements, which are prevalent throughout the
cosmos and need to be in abundance on any property. The peace of the cosmic forces is
transferred to an individual living space and those who dwell in harmony with them are
assured of health, wealth, harmony and happiness.
Planets
In Vasthu, the eight compass directions are associated with certain planets which have
influence on an individual. A dweller should be aware of the planets that govern these
locations because they can enhance his daily life and ensure harmony if the living space is in
oneness with them.
How these vibratory powers govern the individual is determined astrologically. However, he
can remedy or nullify the effects via Vasthu.
Sun: The Sun, an auspicious ruling planet, influences the east of the house; east is a
favourable direction for the main entrance of the property.
This planet represents the five elements and is known as the remover of all obstacles and the
giver of health. It rules the digestive system, heart and blood circulation. Favourable signs of
the Sun's influence are strength, energy, self-confidence and leadership; it also has purifying
qualities.
The negative impact of the planet causes a lack in courage, fatigue and low self-esteem. For
this reason, a property should not have any tall structures in the east and north-east
quadrants as they will obstruct the dweller's prosperity.
There should be more openings like doors and windows in this region and the ground here
should be lower than the rest of the floor or compound. The best use of the east and northeast quadrants are for meditation, prayer and study.
Moon: The moon controls the north-west of the property and governs theemotions, mind and
moods. A dweller in tune with the influence of this planet will enjoy good relationships, fame
and honour. This is the ideal quadrant for the placement of the bathroom and toilet. If the
north-west has a defect - e.g. a prayer room located there - the dweller will suffer dull and
negative effects.
Mars: The southern direction is ruled by Mars, which is associated with fire. It governs the
immune system, appetite and liver and can bring prosperity to the dweller.
The ideal location for the kitchen is the south-east quadrant and the dweller who complies
with that will enjoy good health. Mishaps are likely to occur if this quadrant is defective.
Mercury: This planet rules the north and governs matters related to business, education,
communication and intelligence. . A property with a north entrance will enjoy success; a
defective north (e.g. having a kitchen in this sector) can affect the finances and growth of an
individual.
Jupiter: This planet lies in the north-east, from where positive energy flows into a property.
The best use of this quadrant is for spiritual and study purposes. Jupiter is the provider of joy;
it also controls wealth and success.
Defects in the north-east, like having a master bedroom in this quadrant, can result in
infertility and financial losses. The dweller will also be prone to making irrational decisions.
Couples who sleep in the north-east will suffer depression and lack of self-esteem.
Venus: This planet lies in the south-east and it controls knowledge and judgment. Ideally, use
this quadrant for the kitchen; it will enhance your communication and intellectual skills.
Venus, which rules the organs in the genitourinary system, governs beauty, feelings, romance
and relationships with the opposite sex. Venus blesses the dweller with good taste and a
polished personality. But a defective south-east property will result in thefts and robberies,
and illness related
to the digestive and reproductive systems.
Saturn: This very strong planet lies in the west of a property. It can bring about extreme
positive and negative effects. Saturn governs death, separation and disease. Alternatively, it
builds a good reputation, and harmony and stability in the family. In a property, the western
side should be heavier and have less open space than the eastern and northern sides.
Garbage bins should be placed in this quadrant.
Rahu and Kethu: These celestial bodies are unknown in western astrology but they are
important planets in vedic astrology. Rahu (head of a dragon) influences the south-west and
Ketu (tail of a dragon), the north-east.
The south-west quadrant, the master's corner, is given great importance in Vasthu because it
is the place for the breadwinner of the house. Any defect in this area will have disastrous
consequences.
The north-east is a water corner and there should not be any weight placed in this quadrant
as it will have adverse effects on the occupants.
Vasthu for Deepavali
It is important how a dweller who celebrates Deepavali enhances his property because the
Goddess of Fortune, Devi Lakshmi, comes to bless it on this auspicious day.
The house should be cleaned thoroughly in preparation to receive blessings which improve
the individual's health, wealth and happiness.
On the eve of Deepavali, the entire house must be washed as water is the cleansing agent of
Vasthu. And, where necessary, a new coat of paint should be applied to give the property a
glow.
If painting is not required, one should at least ensure that the main gate of the house looks
presentable. That means no patches of rust or peeling paintwork. Also, be sure to remove
cobwebs, dirt and dust from the walls, ceilings and the corners of the house. A spider web, if
found later, is a
sign of bad times and the likelihood of the dweller running into debt.
All unwanted and broken items like mirrors, shoes and furniture, and unused clothes must be
discarded because they radiate negative energy. Once you have disposed of them, your
property will attract cosmic energies, thus ushering in joy and prosperity.
Case studies
Assistant manager Mogana Sundari Annamalai from Petaling Jaya wrote to say that she is
enjoying harmony and prosperity after observing Vasthu Sastra rules. She and her husband
used to occupy the north-east (which is meant to be the prayer/spiritual quadrant) and they
experienced numerous conflicts from the start of their marriage, three years ago.
"It affected our relationship, causing us unhappiness and interrupted sleep. Despite having a
very good income, we always found that our bills exceeded our income. My progress at work
was affected by obstacles although I worked hard."
Two weeks ago, Mogana decided to shift to a smaller bedroom in the south-west, which is the
master's quadrant in Vasthu. Since then, she and her husband have been enjoying better
sleep and "it has surely added romance and happiness to our married life."
She added: "I can also see some financial gains. We plan to repaint the room for better effect.
I have also placed her jewellery in the extreme south-east corner for better prosperity."
Siva Raja of Seremban has benefited from harmonising his property as per Vasthu. He
noticed that after making certain changes, he got a better job and feels happier now.
