Bibliografia angloamerikkalaisesta akateemisesta sotahistorian
tutkimuksesta

Tässä bibliografiassa sotahistoria-käsite ymmärretään laaja-alaisesti. Britit käyttävät väljää war
studies -käsitettä, kun taas amerikkalaiset ja kanadalaiset suosivat tiukemmin rajaavaa military
history -termiä. Angloamerikkalainen sotahistorian tutkimuksen kenttä on nykyisin aiheidensa
ja näkökulmiensa puolesta erittäin laaja historiantutkimuksen osa-alue. Sotahistorian tutkimus
voidaan jakaa sotilasammatilliseen (soveltavaan), populaariin ja akateemiseen sotahistorian
tutkimukseen. Rajanveto ei kuitenkaan ole aina niin helppoa.
Bibliografia keskittyy akateemiseen sotahistorian tutkimukseen. Kirjallisuus on ryhmitelty muun
muassa alan keskeisten väittelyiden sekä aiheiden, alueiden, aikakausien ja lähestymistapojen
perusteella. Listattujen teosten tieteellinen taso ja käyttöarvo ovat luonnollisesti vaihtelevia.
Pääpaino on innovatiivisissa ja synteesimäisissä tutkimuksissa. Vaikka mukaan on enimmäkseen
kelpuutettu nootitettuja monografioita, mukana on myös yksittäisiä merkittävimpiä
toimitettuja kokoomateoksia.
Sotaa, kriisejä, sotatoimia ja taisteluita käsittelevien teosten kategorisointi voi olla hankalaa,
koska alakategorioita on runsaasti, ja osa teoksista sopisi useiden otsikoiden alle. Joillakin
tutkijoilla saattaa olla muun muassa politologin tai operaatiotutkijan tausta, ja sotahistorian
raja suhteessa esimerkiksi strategian, turvallisuuden, terrorismin tai rauhan- ja
konfliktintutkimuksen suuntaan ei aina ole selvä. Tosin niiden kohdalla kyse on enemmän
politologian ja kansainvälisen politiikan (kansainvälisten suhteiden) piiriin kuuluvasta, tähän
hetkeen liittyvästä ja sotiin kohdistuvasta teoreettisesta tutkimuksesta. Varsinkin
operaatiotutkimuksella on usein turvallisuuspoliittiset motiivit, ja siinä etsitään opetuksia
sodankäynnistä. Näiltä osin on valittu angloamerikkalaisessa tutkijayhteisössä laadittuja,
pääosin empiriaan perustuvia tai sellaisia teoriapainotteisia tutkimuksia, joissa tarkastelu
ulottuu menneisyyteen.
Mukaan on valittu runsaat 550 teosta, jotka ovat ilmestyneet pääsääntöisesti viimeksi
kuluneiden kahdenkymmenen vuoden aikana. Aikarajaus on keinotekoinen, mutta tuona aikana
näkyy hyvin alan kehitys aiheidensa ja näkökulmiensa puolesta erittäin laaja-alaiseksi
historiantutkimuksen osa-alueeksi. Bibliografiasta on havaittavissa uudet tutkimussuuntaukset
ja aiemmin alkaneiden alalajien edelleen kehittyminen osana pitkän linjan jatkumoa. Monia
teemoja on tutkittu jo ennen aikarajauksen alkua, ja joukossa on joitakin tärkeimpiä aiemmin
ilmestyneitä teoksia.
Valinnassa ei ole tehty eroa yhdysvaltalaisen, brittiläisen ja kanadalaisen tutkimuksen välille.
Samojen tutkijoiden (sekä maiden yliopistoissa työskentelevien kolmansien maiden
kansalaisten) töitä luetaan Atlantin molemmin puolin. Kirjoittajien kansallisuutta ei myöskään
voi päätellä kustantajan perusteella, sillä samoilla kustannusyhtiöillä on toimintaa sekä IsossaBritanniassa että Pohjois-Amerikassa. Sen sijaan esimerkiksi Israelissa vaikuttavien Martin van
Creveldin tai Azar Gatin tuotantoa ei sisälly luetteloihin.
