BEA = Bureau of Economic Analysis; MOFA = majority-owned foreign affiliate; SIRD = Survey of Industrial Research and Development; USDIA =
U.S. Direct Investment Abroad.
a
Matched U.S. parent companies that owned R&D-performing MOFAs; that is, matched parent companies that owned at least one MOFA with a
non-zero value for R&D performed. Each matched parent company is counted once in the all-host countries total, and also counted once in each
country in which it has a MOFA that performed R&D. Because a parent company may have R&D performing MOFAs in more than one country,
the sum across countries exceeds total for all host countries.
NOTE: Data from USDIA survey (conducted by BEA) matched to data from SIRD (cosponsored by National Science Foundation and U.S.
Census Bureau).
