BRDIS = Business R&D and Innovation Survey; MOFA = majority-owned foreign affiliate; USDIA = U.S. Direct Investment Abroad.
a
BRDIS companies matched to USDIA survey parent companies with a nonzero value for foreign R&D performed. Each matched parent company is
counted once in the all host countries total.
b
The USDIA survey matched U.S. parent companies that owned R&D-performing MOFAs; that is, the survey matched parent companies that owned at
least one MOFA with a nonzero value for R&D performed. Each matched parent company is counted once in the all host countries total and also is
counted once in each country in which it has a MOFA that performed R&D. Because a parent company may have R&D-performing MOFAs in more than
one country, the sum across countries exceeds the all host countries total.
NOTES: Data are for matched companies obtained by linking BRDIS (cosponsored by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Census Bureau)
with the USDIA survey (conducted by the Bureau of Economic Analysis). Data are not weighted. Detail may not add to total because of rounding.
