Presenter Bios
Catherine Brand serves as the Director of the Executive Search Group and Strategic
Resourcing in the Office of the President. She brings 20 years of experience in senior level
recruiting to the University community. Prior to joining UVa, Catherine spent ten years as
the principal of her own executive search firm. Before that she worked with a recruiting
organization to build and acquire new offices across the state of Virginia and Washington,
D.C. Catherine draws on her work with mission-driven organizations to lead a team of
recruiters that partners effectively with multi-stakeholder search committees, helping
them to align expectations and think creatively about solutions. A few of her team’s recent
engagements include: Director UVa’s China Office; Senior Associate Dean and COO Darden
School of Business; Chief Communications Officer; Executive Vice President and Chief
Operating Officer; Director, Applied Research Institute; CCAM Director of Workforce
Development; Executive Assistant to the President for State Government Relations;
Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development Curry School of Education;
Associate Dean for Development and External Relations School of Architecture; and
Associate Dean for Finance and Administration Frank Batten School of Leadership and
Public Policy. Catherine enjoys being active in the local community and is a former
member of the Board of the Charlottesville Albemarle Chamber of Commerce. She holds a
bachelor’s degree in Communications and Marketing from Virginia Tech.
Dean Dorrie K. Fontaine, RN, PhD, FAAN – the Sadie Heath Cabaniss Professor of Nursing
at the University of Virginia – has led the School of Nursing since 2008. A seasoned critical
care nurse, past president of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and current
president of the Virginia Association of Colleges of Nursing, Fontaine has held
administrative and academic appointments at University of California San Francisco,
Georgetown and the University of Maryland. She holds degrees from Villanova, the
University of Maryland, and the Catholic University of America, and is a staunch supporter
of interprofessional education for nursing and medical school students. The visionary
behind the School’s Compassionate Care and Empathic Leadership Initiative, and a firm
believer in promoting diversity among faculty and students, Dean Fontaine lives on U.Va.’s
historic Lawn in Pavilion IX with her husband Barry.
John F. Hawley received a BA in Physics and Astronomy from Haverford College in 1980,
and his PhD in Astronomy in 1984 from the University of Illinois. His thesis research was
on the numerical simulation of black hole accretion. He was a Bantrell Fellow in
Theoretical Astrophysics at the California Institute of Technology from 1984 through 1987.
He joined UVA as an assistant professor in the Department of Astronomy in 1987. He is
currently a Professor of Astronomy at Virginia.
His research interests include
computational simulation and black hole astrophysics. He received the 1993 Helen B.
Warner Prize from the American Astronomical Society for his contributions in
astrophysical theory. In 2013 he was awarded the one million dollar Shaw Prize in
Astronomy along with Steve Balbus (now at Oxford) for their discovery of the magnetopage 1 of 3

rotational instability in accretion disks. He served as Chair of the Department of
Astronomy from 2006 through 2012 and presently is the Associate Dean for the Sciences in
the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia.
Archie Holmes, Jr. is a Professor in the Charles L. Brown Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering, and Associate Provost. He received his B.S. degree from The
University of Texas at Austin in 1991, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical
Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1992 and1997. As
Associate Provost, Archie will work on a variety of projects in academic affairs including
initiatives emerging from strategic planning.
Maurie McInnis, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Professor of art history at the
University of Virginia, received her B.A. with Highest Distinction from U.Va. and her M.A.
and PhD. from Yale University. She has published extensively on American art history
including four books that have won six book awards. She has also curated four museum
exhibitions and served as an advisor to American museums and historic properties.
Previously she served as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Academic Programs in the
College of Arts and Sciences. In her role as vice provost for academic affairs she serves as
the provost's chief adviser and representative on matters relating to the University’s
academic activities, with a central role in strengthening connections between schools. She
oversees several units, including the Teaching Resource Center, the University of Virginia
Press, and the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities. She also oversees
institutional accreditation issues and academic program review, participates on the
provost’s promotion and tenure committee, administers academic enhancement programs
for undergraduate students and coordinates academic activities with other University
leaders.
Martha Sites is Deputy University Librarian at the University of Virginia where she is
responsible for the day-to-day operation and services of 11 libraries and an off-site highdensity shelving facility. Prior to her move to the Library in 1996 to serve as Associate
University Librarian for Information Technology, she was Director of User Support in UVa’s
central information technology organization. She has played a significant role in shaping
the University of Virginia’s “library of tomorrow” that blends digital and traditional library
activities and programs to provide scholars with innovative collections, tools, spaces, and
services. Her passion is enabling the use of technology in research, teaching, and learning.
She has served on numerous University and national councils and task forces. Her current
professional interests include digital preservation; data curation; next-generation
organization & service models in libraries; and development of library leaders. She is
Executive Lead for Academic Preservation Trust.

Tom Skalak - As Vice President for Research at UVA, Tom is responsible for the integration
and enhancement of research activities across UVA’s eleven schools and multiple research
centers, in partnership with external corporate, governmental, and private partners. The
university’s goal is to integrate the unique resources of a comprehensive research and
learning organization to explore, discover, and invent, bringing diverse talents to bear on
major societal problems, producing innovation that drives the creative economy, and
enabling scholarship that distinguishes the university. Tom is a frequent speaker on
collaborative innovation at Fortune 500 and government partners in the U.S., E.U., and Asia,
including The White House, State Department, and National Science Foundation.
