ACTION 2.3 Office of the Superintendent of Schools MONTGOMERY COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS Rockville, Maryland April 23, 2013 MEMORANDUM To: Members of the Board of Education From: Joshua P. Starr, Superintendent of Schools Subject: National Student Leadership Week—April 14−20, 2013 WHEREAS, National Student Leadership Week is a time when schools across the nation recognize the accomplishments, efforts, and service of student leaders with this year’s national theme of “Student Leaders: Raising the Bar”; and WHEREAS, Student leaders are a positive influence to their peers, modeling good character and values in and out of the classroom, and serve as change agents to improve the overall climate and academic performance of their schools; and WHEREAS, In April 2013, student leadership activities include the Montgomery County Region of the Maryland Association of Student Councils and the Montgomery County Junior Councils officer elections, a student voter registration drive, the election of the student member of the Board of Education, and National Student Leadership Week; and WHEREAS, The Board of Education encourages our youth to participate in leadership positions that will provide students with early and vital experiences in exercising a voice in matters of common concern, reconciling diverse interests, and making a sustained commitment to serving students in our communities; now therefore be it Resolved, That the Montgomery County Board of Education hereby joins with the superintendent of schools in recognizing the week of April 14–20, 2013, as National Student Leadership Week in Montgomery County Public Schools; and be it further Resolved, That the Montgomery County Board of Education commends student leaders for their efforts and accomplishments on behalf of Montgomery County Public Schools and urges citizens to seek opportunities to recognize student leaders and support their training and activities as they prepare themselves as future leaders of our cities, states, and nation.
