BOSTONSIGHT PROSE TREATMENT NOW AT
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO
Innovative Treatment for Complex Corneal Disease
NEEDHAM, MA (May 7, 2012) – Boston Foundation for Sight, an international leader in the treatment of
patients with complex corneal disease, announced today that the University of California, San Francisco,
Department of Ophthalmology and Francis I. Proctor Foundation, ranked #10 in the country for ophthalmology
by U.S. News & World Report, has established a new clinic to treat complex corneal disease.
Pioneered by Boston Foundation for Sight, prosthetic replacement of the ocular surface ecosystem (PROSE)
treatment restores vision, supports healing, reduces symptoms and improves quality of life. The PROSE Clinic
will use FDA-approved custom made prosthetic devices to replace or support impaired ocular surface systems
that protect and enable vision. For many thousands of patients, PROSE can be the ideal, and sometimes only,
treatment capable of restoring vision and dramatically reducing eye pain and light sensitivity.
The Francis I. Proctor Foundation for Research in Ophthalmology, led by Todd P. Margolis, MD, PhD, will
make PROSE treatment to available to hundreds of patients in northern California. “Through our new PROSE
Clinic, we will be able to offer another innovative technique with which we can treat patients suffering from
severe cornea and ocular surface disease,” said Dr. Margolis.
There are an estimated two million people in the United States who suffer from complex corneal disease.
Boston Foundation for Sight estimates that more than 400,000 from that population might benefit from PROSE
treatment. “Making the life-changing BostonSight PROSE treatment accessible on a local and regional basis is
a strategic goal,” said Eugene A. Bonte, Boston Foundation for Sight’s President and CEO. “UCSF’s focus on
the advancement of innovative and collaborative treatment makes them the perfect partner to provide PROSE in
northern California and the northwestern United States.”
Nancy Lee, OD, recently completed the Boston Sight PROSE clinical fellowship and will begin to see patients
at UCSF in late spring/early summer 2012. Dr. Lee joined UCSF after working for the past two years at a
private practice in Fresno, CA. Dr. Lee received her bachelor of arts degree in molecular and cell biology from
the University of California, Berkeley, and continued her education there, receiving her doctor of optometry
degree in 2008. She pursued a residency in New York at the Ophthalmic Consultants at the New York Eye and
Ear Infirmary and the State University of New York, specializing in cornea and contact lens.
