Synergistic Activities
• Actively involved in broadening participation of groups underrepresented in science in
South Africa between 1994 and 2003. Specifically I trained 1 PhD and 9 MSc coloured and
black students, and supervised the honors research projects of 11 coloured and black
students (as classified by National Research Foundation of South Africa).
• Member of professional organizations (American Society for Microbiology), and vice
president of the ASM’s North Central branch for 2006/7. President of ASM’s North Central
Branch, 2013. ASM Region V coordinator (2013 – 2015, 2016 - 2018). Member of Sigma Xi.
• Ad hoc reviewer for various journals including Microbiology, Journal of Proteome Research,
Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Journal of Bacteriology, Environmental Microbiology and
Molecular Microbiology.
• External examiner for various theses, dissertations and reviewer for National Research
Foundation of South Africa, Water Research Commission of South Africa and National
Science Foundation, USA.
