Omnipotence
Even if you simply defined “omnipotence” as the sum of all potential in the universe,
God would be omnipotent for He created the universe. Elohim alone did it.
 Genesis 1:1 HCSB In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
 John 1:3 HCSB All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one
thing was created that has been created.
 Isaiah 44:24 HCSB This is what the LORD, your Redeemer who formed you from the
womb, says: I am the LORD, who made everything; who stretched out the heavens by
Myself; who alone spread out the earth;
The ancient rabbinic commentators said that the word for light here is not the word we
use for the visible spectrum. It’s better understood as “energy.” That is reflected in
John by the association of life and light. The point is that Adonai is the source of all
energy. That makes Him by definition omnipotent.
 Genesis 1:3 HCSB Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
 John 1:4 HCSB Life was in Him, and that life was the light of men.
There are no physical limitations to such a God.
 Genesis 18:14 HCSB Is anything impossible for the LORD? At the appointed time I
will come back to you, and in about a year she will have a son."
 Matthew 19:26 HCSB But Jesus looked at them and said, "With men this is
impossible, but with God all things are possible."
 Luke 1:37 HCSB For nothing will be impossible with God."
There is no ultimate resistance to such a God. We may rebel, but we will be crushed in
the process.
 Job 42:2 HCSB I know that You can do anything and no plan of Yours can be
thwarted.
1
We should not be amazed that a God, who can create all the energy of the universe
and is the source of all life, can raise a dead body.
 Acts 26:8 HCSB Why is it considered incredible by any of you that God raises the
dead?
In fact, God can take an inanimate object and from it can not only raise life, but also
give it a specific genetic imprint.
 Matthew 3:9 HCSB And don't presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as
our father.' For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these
stones!
 Luke 3:8 HCSB Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don't start
saying to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father,' for I tell you that God is able to
raise up children for Abraham from these stones!
What is truly amazing is that Adonai is willing to lend us the use of His immeasurable
strength!
 Ephesians 1:19 HCSB and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power to us
who believe, according to the working of His vast strength.
 Ephesians 3:20 HCSB Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we
ask or think--according to the power that works in you- Ephesians 6:10 HCSB Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength.
God’s omnipotence should drive us to holy living.
 Genesis 17:1 HCSB When Abram was 99 years old, the LORD appeared to him,
saying, "I am God Almighty. Live in My presence and be devout.
God’s omnipotence should have a prominent presence in our worship.
 Revelation 19:6 HCSB Then I heard something like the voice of a vast multitude, like
the sound of cascading waters, and like the rumbling of loud thunder, saying:
Hallelujah--because our Lord God, the Almighty, has begun to reign!
People with philosophical pretentions will ask ridiculous questions like “Can God create a
stone too big for Him to lift?”, “Can He make a round cube?”. That these are mere fatuous
word games is immediately apparent to anyone with any training in logic and an honest
approach to the debate. These types of questions are designed to create a false dichotomy.
Either God cannot lift the stone or He cannot create the stone. Either way – God is not
omnipotent.
The usual way to deal with such nonsense is to challenge the language. For the challenge
to have any meaning, the challenge itself must have meaning. For instance, consider the
Jabberwocky poem by Lewis Carrol found in Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice
Found There, written in 1872.
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
Interesting…but what in the world does it mean? It rhymes, so it must be a poem, but Mr.
Carrol simply invented words with similar sounds that ALMOST feel like they have some
meaning. However, no amount of investigation can reveal meaning for the words and
concepts have no basis in reality.
2
To ask “Can God create a round cube?” has the same degree of meaning as “’Twas
brillig, and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe.”
However, what about other issues that actually bear some logical semblance to reality?
Can God lie? Can God act against His nature? Again, these bear some semblance of reason;
the questions have direct bearing on two logical principles, namely: the laws of identity and
non-contradiction. Just as it makes no sense to ask about a round cube, it makes no sense to
ask about a sinning God, if the God you are attempting to challenge is the biblical one. If you
begin to redefine God as one who may act contrary to holiness, then you are no longer
speaking of Adonai Adonaim – you moved to some other, lesser, false god. Now you are
guilty of the logical fallacy “straw man”. Although God is powerful enough to create out of
nothing and to resurrect, He is impotent in regards to anything contrary to His nature.
What God Cannot Do
He cannot deny Himself (go back on His word).
 2 Timothy 2:13 HCSB if we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny
Himself.
He is impervious to sinful temptations.
 James 1:13 HCSB No one undergoing a trial should say, "I am being tempted by
God." For God is not tempted by evil, and He Himself doesn't tempt anyone.
He cannot lie.
 Titus 1:2 HCSB in the hope of eternal life that God, who cannot lie, promised before
time began,
 Hebrews 6:18 HCSB so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is
impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong
encouragement to seize the hope set before us.
